dude you wanna talk mean, i keep seeing that one post that's like "i think a good writer can make mischaracterization good actually!" and all the replies being like "YEAH you just have to figure out what WOULD make him say that!" and i just sit here like uh

the problem there is.

that "a good writer" is not. most of the people on this website. and a lot of that is because people are SHIT at media analysis and don't understand that yeah, actually, you need a firm grasp on characterization to even BEGIN to determine what would make him say that, and then even more analysis and consideration to construct the circumstances themselves! You Need The Characterization To Make "Mischaracterization" Work.

but no we have to be sooo niceys and never call out the way parts of every. single. fandom. i've ever been in. feeds characters into archetypes which are PREDOMINANTLY informed by unexamined biases instead of considering them as A Specific Character In A Specific Story. it does actually fucking matter if you characterize every taller character as masculine, stupid, aggressive tops and every shorter character as effeminate, submissive, intellectual bottoms. that does in fact impact how you perceive people in real life. it is actually a fucking problem.

despite the titles, these are both grishaverse fics. but you can see where the brainrot went “what if….. we take the prestige dramas……. and we rub them all over this other thing.”

“gangster au I’m not writing” does actually have a good chance of being published one day, because I absolved myself of the need for a Plot and decided it’ll just be a genfic with some vignettes and a healthy garnish of historical details

“We enlisted together, you know. Thought it’d be a good idea, get out of—get away. A grand adventure.” He spread his hands wide to illustrate, a momentary showman’s smile. “It was so routine, you know? When it happened. Repairing wire. Talking about—I don’t even remember. meanwhile, “succession theme” is seven pages of actually written fic, followed by 20 full pages of bullet points where I have entire scenes blocked out in mostly dialogue with absolutely no line breaks, just massive walls of Giant Scene Paragraphs Per Bullet Point and I really don’t know why I did that to myself

Ahhhhhh Gina, this message made my day! honestly i was being a little dramatic in the tags there because i myself have not seen a good amount of the movies on that list. blair witch project IS a classic, i mean i’m pretty sure it invented the found footage genre or at least popularized it? i remember watching it at a sleepover with my friends in middle school and not being able to sleep the rest of the night. but Rec!! oh man it really is one of my favorite horror movies (ignore the sequels). i didn’t watch it until college when i was a *mature adult not afraid of horror movies anymore* and it 100% fucked me up. i hope you like it!!

trying to get me in trouble!!! that’s okay, i’ll own it: reports of samira’s perfection are overexaggerated. yes she’s a good doctor, yes she makes her patients feel seen, yes robby is in the wrong for treating her the way he does, particularly in s2 but i’ll give the critics parts of s1 as well, yes there is a problem with underrepresented women of color in the medical field. none of that erases that: she is very selective about who she extends her sympathy/empathy to, and to what degree she extends it; she snaps at the pittlings any time they behave in a way she doesn’t like or approve of, and so is an AWFUL teacher, IN A TEACHING HOSPITAL; and she doesn’t know or acknowledge her own limits and doesn’t learn from the consequences of crossing them, including when people who ARE better at teaching and who have more experience than her suggest she reconsider whether she’s suited for emergency medicine. it sucks to have a dream and not be suited to/in a position to achieve it! i know! but if that’s the case you either change your approach or you change your standards, and i have a very hard time excusing that kind of hubris when the dream in question involves RESPONSIBILITY FOR WHETHER PEOPLE LIVE OR DIE. she didn’t deserve to be treated the way she was by her attendings, but can we stop pretending she’s any less flawed than the rest of the characters on the show? as if that’s not the point?

can the entire fanbase shuuuuuuuuuuuut uuuuuuuuuup about richard dying. jesus christ. it was telegraphed SO clearly from the start of s4 MINIMUM, and arguably from jimmy dying in s2—which is another complaint that’s utter bullshit imho, jimmy was always going to die too—that there was only one way that character’s story was going to end. i know he’s the favorite but it was a well-thought-out arc for a secondary character.
