Los Angeles is so lovely right now. And it’s been made even lovelier with the addition of the Kimpton La Peer Hotel. Great lobby, restaurant, patio, and luxurious rooms on a quiet but totally clutch street in West Hollywood. Best of all, my ultimate woman crush @gullajonsdottir has done the interior design. A perk of randomly stalking hotel websites: I learn that the Opus Hotel in Vancouver has Mike Tyson Punch-Out art in their hotel rooms. I’m now having vivid flashbacks to rainy days (and some sunny days) of summer vacation spent in my brother’s room playing Nintendo and either crying in frustration at not being able to beat Glass Joe or jumping around victorious after Little Mac won a round.
Master List of 2016 Worldwide Hotel Openings
There may be no more HotelChatter but there is still a Master List of Worldwide Hotel Openings for 2016, going up on The Shift for LE Miami. However, I thought I would also drop the list here with some colorful commentary.
I know I probably say this every year (sadly, HotelChatter archives are in “purgatory” so we can’t go back and find out for sure) but 2016 is going to be insane. For starters, Donald Trump’s Trump Hotels are opening three spots this year, including one in Rio de Janeiro. (#thingsthatmakeyougohmmm.) The other two are in D.C. and Vancouver. So even if he doesn’t win the presidency, he’ll still be around D.C. a lot.
Second, Downtown LA is getting a NoMad, a Freehand, an Indigo, a Dazzler, and an Esplendor while WeHo is getting a James Hotel and Malibu is getting a Nobu Ryokan. (Cue the Randy Newman song, “I Love LA!”) New Orleans will get a super fly Ace Hotel and everyone will go to Nashville (with a tan obvi) to sleep with a Virgin. Abroad, The Ritz Paris is reopening in March, EDITION will open in Sanya and Bangkok, Dubai will have a series of big openings (Hold the fireworks though, mmkay?), and Moxy is pretty much gearing up for global millennial hotel domination. In short, it’s going to be a fantastic year for hotel openings. I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds.
