HouseTalkTuesday: Yard Clean Up

That was me last weekend, before the sickness and the back pain. My husband kindly took this picture and then shared it on Facebook for everyone to see.

As you can gather from this photo, our yard at the new house, is not so much a yard as it is a jungle. It actually looks SO much better than it did when we first moved in. This summer Joe and one of our friends worked really hard to chop down as many trees and tear out as many bushes as possible. However, it's still not your typical yard.

So, when we invited a large group of people (and kids) over, we wanted to clean it up as much as possible. That meant Joe taking off of work and spending a whole day blowing leaves onto tarps and then dragging them off into the woods. The next day we worked together to haul off forty years worth of brush before blowing forty years worth of dirt, acorns and twigs onto tarps once again and once again hauling them off.

It was a lot of work, but for the first time in a really really long time, our yard saw the light of day. And we had a nice party too.

HouseTalkTuesday: Septic Tank

So we had to deal with something super gross this week, namely, our septic tank.

A few weeks ago when I was doing a load of laundry I went downstairs to the basement to check on it, and there was water. There wasn't a ton of water, but there was definitely water, coming up around the shower stall and around the toilet in the basement bathroom. It took us a while, but we came to the conclusion that the septic tank was either full or the main line drain in the house was clogged.

So, we got some main line cleaner and some Diet Coke (thanks to a tip from a friend) and poured it all down the pipes to hopefully clean things out. It worked...for about a week and a half. Then, back came the water. At that point we knew we had to get the septic cleaned out.

We had a bit of a problem though. We didn't know where the septic tank was. We never received any building plans with the house, so we really weren't even sure where to look other than trying to track the thank from the vent pipe on the roof. Luckily, Muriel, the former owner, left the name and number of her nephew in the house. We called him who got us in touch with Muriel! It was so great to talk to her and of course she knew right where to look. Joe was able to dig up the tank. It was four feet under ground.

So, after we found the tank, we had to get someone over here to do the work. We found a company who gave us an estimate, and they came here on Friday. We had to have the pipe between the septic and the overflow tank replaced. We had to a vent pipe installed in the basement, and we needed to get the septic tank cleaned out.

They came Friday, but unfortunately they did a really not very good job. The vent pipe they put in downstairs looks awful, so Joe is having to redo that. They also did not pump the tank. Instead they just hydrojetted it and used chemicals to force it to drain out. It did not drain out. Joe made them come back on Monday and put more chemicals in. If it hasn't reduced down in a few days we'll have to make them come back again...very annoying.

Joe keeps saying we hired the wrong people (which we did) and that it was such a rookie mistake (which it was). But, I keep telling him that we're rookie homeowners so that's going to happen sometimes. We just have to live with it and move on.

HouseTalkTuesday: We Have Light

That picture may not look like much to you. But to me us...I can assure you, it's everything.

Let me explain. Literally the day before we closed on this house, I was going through the many pictures of the house we'd taken on our 3 visits to see it. All of a sudden it hit me. We'd seen the house on sunny days...always sunny days, so we didn't notice. The house didn't have overhead lighting.

Sure there were lights, even a couple of overhead lights (kitchen, dining room), but there definitely was not traditional overhead lighting in the house.

In our master bedroom, in fact, there was just a wall sconce (a picture of which I sadly don't have). It provided such little light in the room, it hardly served a purpose at all, but sadly that was the light the light switch was hooked up to.

This weekend I finally had enough, so we went out and got a new light fixture. Neither Joe nor I had ever installed any type of light fixture before, but with a little Googling, I at least felt sure we were ready to go. Joe did most of the work and bam - just like that, new light, lots of light, wonderful light.

You may notice the fixture looks like a bathroom vanity light (secret: it is). I didn't want to replace a wall sconce with a wall sconce because they all looked so dim. So, we got this fixture instead. I think it turned out great.
