sheryl swoopes on the houston comets (1997-2007)
as a star on the 1996 olympic gold medal team and a household name, sheryl swoopes was one of the faces of the league from its inception. swoopes was pregnant with her son in the league’s inaugural year, making her the perfect model to market the league as family-friendly.
in 2005, swoopes came out as gay in an ESPN article, stating “My reason for coming out isn't to be some sort of hero … I'm just at a point in my life where I'm tired of having to pretend to be somebody I'm not. I'm tired of having to hide my feelings about the person I care about. About the person I love.” with this declaration, swoopes would be one of the first—and by far the most popular—wnba players to come out.
swoopes raised her son with her partner, alisa scott, until the couple split in 2011. swoopes is believed to be bisexual as she would later find love with and marry a close male friend.
Introducing the Houston Comets
Hockey has rotted my brain the last couple of months (and has been a background player in my life since college), so I jumped at the chance to create my own team via @hat-trick-honey's Fictional Men Do It Better project. Roster to come shortly with a handful of OC's...and after that, I'll update my pinned post. Probably. We'll see.
