The Houston Dynamo are heading to the Eastern Conference Semifinals
Written by: Jorge Belon
Forward Will Bruin snapped his month long goal less streak by scoring two goals today for the Houston Dynamo 3-0 victory over the Montreal Impact on Halloween night at BBVA Compass Stadium.
“I thought Will Bruin was excellent tonight,” Houston Coach Dominic Kinnear told Major League Soccer writer Darrell Lovell. “It’s great to see him scoring goals. I think he enjoyed it a lot after getting knocked down all night.”
The 24-year-old-forward got the monkey of his back at the 16-minute-of the first half. Bruin, received a pass from left back Corey Ashe, Bruin would then find a cutting Ricardo Clark. Bruin would continue his run into the box and Clark would back heel the ball right to him.
Bruin with no hesitation would curl the ball into the right hand corner of the net to give the Dynamo the lead and break his long goal scoring drought in the process.
“Will knows we have confidence in him, regardless of what people say,” Ashe told MLS writer Lovell. “People are going to love you and they’re going to hate you but we know that he’s capable of. He has a lot of confidence in himself…Tonight was huge. You need a guy to build that confidence and get hot around playoff time.”
The Dynamo after taking the lead would not cool of their attack they kept on pushing the Impact, and 11-minute-later Houston was awarded a penalty. Honduran international Oscar Boniek Garcia would step and bury the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the net.
Boniek would send Montreal goalkeeper Troy Perkins the other way, and the goal shy Dynamo were now up by two goals, and they showed no signs of slowing down their tempo.
The Impact in the second half would begin to get some life, but every time Montreal Italian forward Marco Di Vaio would take a shot, either the defense would block his attempted shot, or Houston goalie Tally Hall would save it.
The frustration for Montreal continued to grow as the game went on and finally at the 70-minute-Impact defender Nelson Rivas would get his second yellow card of the game for a reckless challenge against Bruin in the air.
Montreal was down by two goals and now down a man in the match. Houston would push for the final third goal of the match with their new advantage.
Bruin would step up again and score his second goal in world class style. Bruin would receive a long range pass from Ashe, he would beat the Impact defender to the ball, and elude one defender by displaying great footwork; Bruin dribble pass Perkins and keep his composure to place the ball into the right hand corner of the net.
“I’m glad for him [Bruin],” Boswell told MLS writer Lovell. “I’m really happy he got his goals tonight and hopefully he keeps going forward.”
The Orange Army would explode with Bruins second goal, the Impact would also lose it after seeing Bruin score again.
Right before the game would end Montreal would go down to eight men, because substitute Andres Romero would kick Dynamo defender Kofi Sarkodie while he was on the ground, and the play had already been whistled dead.
After that incident Di Vaio would get a direct red card because he grabbed Ashe by the neck and hit him in the face as well.
The Impact completely melted down and ended their season with a very ugly image to their fans to remember and a very bitter taste for the players and coaching staff to carry until the start of the 2014-Major-League Soccer season in March.
As for Houston, they now will be hosting the Supporter Shield winners this season, the New York Red Bulls on Sunday Nov. 3, 2013, to start the two leg Eastern Conference semifinal series.
