I’d be lying if I told you my head wasn’t beginning to spin when talking about social networks, after all, I enjoy a good social engagement on a good social platform just as much as the other person! But, recently the quantity of quality social networking platforms seems to be tripling; it really is becoming quite difficult to keep up. And so, in comes the latest, perhaps well on its way to fame simply because it’s owned by Twitter (hello Vine.) Meet the iOS only app (for now,) Periscope!

What is Periscope

The concept here is simple; give the user the ability to live stream video whenever and wherever. At face value, this is something fairly difficult to understand, especially when you take into account apps like Snapchat, Vine and Instagram all have video capabilities. But, none of them offer LIVE video!

The concept and mission statement for this app isn’t the only thing simple and to the point; the user interface is also racking up many points in the user friendly department. The app itself is made up of three tabs, watch, broadcast and people. The watch tab is what you can consider your feed, where you can see a nicely laid of presentation of Live videos from both your friends and the community. The broadcast tab is where you’ll be setting up your live stream, more on that in a bit. And finally, the people tab is where you’ll go to see you friends, find new friends, edit your profile and so on.

How does it work

What about actually getting down to business and starting your own live video? As with everything else in Periscope, it’s super easy to do so. Once on the Broadcast tab, you’re giving a description bar cleverly titled “What are you seeing now?” Once you fill that out, you then have three other options, location (which is self-explanatory,) privacy, which gives you the ability to make it a private stream and a share to Twitter button. Finally, a big red “Start Broadcast” button. And that’s it.

While playing around with Periscope for a day or two, there is little about it I disliked, but there are a few things worth mention. For one, the app favors portrait orientation when streaming, much like Snapchat, this drives me insane! I’ve long been bitching at people to record video the right way, in landscape, then along came Snapchat and now Periscope, so now my video feeds are forever ruined. Second, because this is a Twitter product, it’s bonded pretty closely to Twitter. This may not be a bad thing for some, but for others who don’t have an account or who simply use something else like Facebook or Google +, they could be left out in the cold.

Periscope at its very core is a dope concept delivered with great polish, not to mention being pushed by Twitter. Although Twitter was able to launch Vine into success bases on its brand recognition along, I am not completely sold on the idea they could do it again with Periscope, even if the app has everything going for it. But, there is one really huge part of this equation that is beginning to become a very powerful conversation.

Does Periscope change the way we consume news and events

Periscope hadn’t been on the market a full 24 hours, and there were numerous broadcasts of an explosion in Manhattan, New York, where a good amount of people were injured. Excluding the fact that people already had Periscope installed and understood it’s intended purpose, it was amazing how it all unfolded. The persons live streaming the explosion were able to capture the raw and uncut chaos in the area, as well as interact and reply to viewer’s questions and comments. Amazing! To take amazing even further, this was all going on before the police, fire fighters and even news crews found their way to the scene! AMAZING!

Of course, there is a lot to talk about here. First, the person streaming the event is suddenly given a unique power to commentate and opinionate what is actually going on based on their state of shock or excitement, so the viewer’s take away from the live stream could influenced. Second, for most people, watching something unfold in such a raw format might not be very informative. People like to have news organizations step in and pull a story together from all angles. And finally, this type of raw and uncut new reporting by the average person could potentially add to a nasty trend in our society. A trend where people are reluctant to engage, join the fight, joint the effort, feel the emotion, enjoy the moment, so on and so forth, all because they want to capture footage for social media.

Moral conversation aside, Periscope has a ton of potential to be a winner. Not only is the concept unique enough to exist on its own, but the experience and design of the app makes it a joy to use. Factor in the backing of Twitter and the excitement around how this will change the way we consume news and events, you might want to keep your eye on this app!
