Howie Good

Drunken poets walk in and break something and then walk out again. It’s almost as if a storm happens personally to each of us.Doesn’t mean it’s not important. Today we were looking for flowers for the funeral, but the shelves held only bottles, broken auto parts, a basket with three dozen eggs. Bees can fly about nine miles to find food, so a Mickey Mouse teddy bear that my sister had since she was little should be able to jump over the moon. I just don’t know exactly when.

Last night I dreamed they built a giant bonfire.  The books I'd written in my head refused to burn.

Home Starts With a Single Step

You know how you catch a glimpse of yourself when you're out and about? I was startled at what a sight I was. I've got scars and stuff up and down my body. The floods, basically the misery, it’s relentless. Just to put strings on a viola has become impossible. I’m composing, if not music, sounds like waves on the beach or perhaps wind in the forest. So I really have to plan my day, every day, very well. I can’t just go in and plant trees and walk away. Sometimes I want to say, “Hello. Where’s your beard?” But, of course, that can’t happen. I know that. It risks being misunderstood by visitors. I should probably lock the doors and leave the lights off to make it look like no one is home.
