Some people can be reluctant to negotiate for a number of reasons, one of which could be they have no proven method. So, following we have an outline for a simple but effective negotiation process…
Preparation – It is wise to ensure all relevant facts are known in order to clarify the position of both parties. What are the needs and wants from both sides? How can all be satisfied through this process?
Discussion – A meeting or call needs to be arranged, during which a discussion between both sides can take place so everyone is able to state their position.
Clarification of Potential Outcome – It is useful to have an understanding of the outcome for both sides. Clarification is essential in order to conclude a successful negotiation. It might be that in a more complex negotiation outcomes are considered in order of importance and addressed in such a manor.
Negotiation towards a Win-Win outcome – If a Win-Win outcome can be achieved for both parties the negotiation would have been a success. This may not always be possible, but if a clear understanding of both sides situation is discussed in advance then something close to a Win-Win outcome is more likely.
Agreement – It is essential to have an open mind in order to achieve an agreement satisfactory to all. It needs to be clear and an understanding form both sides as to what exactly the outcome is.
Implementation – After an agreement is made, a course of action can be planned and implemented in order to move forward.
Entering into a situation where negotiation is required, having a system in place would always give you a stronger position to start from. This with effective communication and listening skills all adds to making the process of negotiation more effective.
