Character family stuff!
Obviously there's no way I'm doing this for all the characters cuz there's too many but here's a few that actually have some backstory:
Sonic: Was orphaned at a young age, and was raised by his Uncle Chuck! He was always a free spirit, so as a teen he mostly traveled and lived on his own in his van, but he still is really close with his uncle and visits him a lot.
Tails: His birth family, the Prowers, were extremely neglectful and abusive. He was put in the foster system at a pretty young age and went through a ton of different homes. None of them "stuck", and he doesn't really consider himself as having any family.
Amy: Has parents, but although they give her what she needs and stuff they aren't at all involved in her life, leaving her with attachment issues.
Knuckles and Tikal are cousins. Knuckles had a pretty good relationship with his parents, and was homeschooled by them. Tikal has a very tense relationship with her dad, Pachacamac. They come from a different, more tribal culture, but Knuckles is a second-generation immigrant out of that culture while Tikal was raised in the culture and moved here more recently.
Cosmo: Lost her mom a few years before coming to college, still has her dad Dark Oak and loves him but he's not really a great person
Vector: Never really knew his dad but was raised by his very loving, but very strong personalitied, God-fearing ma. They had some tension during his early teen years but now that he's more mature they're super close. His ma has also decided that everyone on Vector's floor are her grandbabies and makes them food and stuff.
Espio: Comes from a very high achieving, emotionally distant family. His parents have extremely high standards for him that he's never been able to fulfill and they totally aren't abusive about it why are you asking . His relationship with them is pretty tense. He also has two older siblings but they don't really show up
Shadow and Maria are about as close as siblings can be. Shadow was adopted by Maria's family, his bio dad being Black Doom, who doesn't pay child support and who Shadow avoids at all costs. Shadow does have some stresses that came from being the "healthy kid" once Maria started showing more signs of her chronic illness, and while he never begrudged her that, there is some tension with their parents because of Maria's problems taking precedence over him. Shadow and Maria also spent a lot of time with their grandfather, Gerald, and are somewhat closer with him than their actual parents.
Metal, Belle, and Sage: All children of Dr. Robotnik, but Belle has a different mom. There's some tension there, but the three are slowly attempting to work through that. Belle and Sage are also pretty close with their (second?) cousin, Maria (and Shadow somewhat), and Metal and Shadow have a subtle friendship.
Mephiles: Has a twin sister, Iblis, who is also a student at HU. She is the only person Mephiles actually cares about, and he covers up for her when her strong emotions get her in trouble.
Surge and Kit: Foster kids of Dr. Starline and non-biological siblings. Starline is abusive to them and has sent them to Hedgehog University as part of a plan to undermine Dr. Robotnik.
