Fifteen of us got to go through the normally locked-off Portola Gate and into the San Francisco Watershed on this month’s Ramble. We were the only ones on the trail except for a ranger and his Border Collie.

Southbound Ramble!
A few more pictures from this Saturday’s Huckleberry Ramble. Started in the soupy fog up Dirty Mt. San Bruno. Rolled through the sunshine up to Sweeney Ridge and on to Planet of the Apes. Good times, great group and new trails (Gray Whale Trail WOW!).

Huckleberry Ramble: The Fire Roads Less Traveled
Third edition of the Huckleberry Ramble—this time we’re hitting some of the lesser-known fire roads of Marin County. All are welcome! Come ride some mixed terrain on your ‘cross bike with me and the Tartes!
The Huckleberry Ramble Saturday, August 16
Meet for pre-ride coffee & pastries at 8am. Roll 8:30am.
Depart: Huckleberry Bikes, 1073 Market (btwn 6th & 7th) Finish: Post-ride beers and tall tales at Biergarten, 424 Octavia 51mi / 5,914’ Pace: Alternating hot and cool with a few regroups.
Out to Camino Alto, but then taking a turn into Camino Alto Open Space. We’ll ride up Escalon Fire Road, then along Lower Summit Fire Road before heading along the Southern Marin Line Fire Road. We’ll connect with Old Railroad Grade up to the West Point Inn for a water stop, then descend to Pantoll via Old Stage Fire Road. From there, we’ll drop down Deer Park Fire Road and meet up with Muir Woods Road, climb back up to Four Corners and head back (via optional Headlands Dirt) to Biergarten for some cold frosties.
Railroad Grade includes some fairly rocky sections, so pump those tires & bring a spare tube (or two if you’re riding skinny tires).

Man, biking is the best. I led Saturday's Huckleberry Ramble for the Vive La Tarte CX Team through solid Marin dirt—some old, some new-to-me. Then Sunday tandem'd 73 miles to some swimming holes with my favorite riding buddy.
