Hugues Capét & Adélaide d’Aquitaine: king and queen of the Franks.
I'm casually trying to research more info about the Capetian co-crowning, and I think the more detailed info I've gotten is from Strickland's Henry the Young King when talking about how Henry II was inspired by the Capetian tradition for his ceremony for HTYK. However I wonder am I just not searching the right words or is it all in books I don't have...??? In French maybe?
When I look it up I find info about Hugh Capet and Robert the Pious of course, but not about the practice in general specific to the Capetians. Did it just go SOOO smoothly until the 1170s that it didn't warrant a mention?
If anyone has interesting leads or authors to check out, let me know. I'm curious...
Louis V (c. 967-987), proclaimed King of France under the protection of Hugh Capet, future King of France, in 986. Drawn and engraved by Ambroise Tardieu in 1825.
On July 3rd, 987, Hugh Capet was crowned King of France.
He became the first King of the Capetian Dynasty, whose various branches would officially rule over France until the French Revolution in 1792, and for brief periods afterwards during the “Bourbon Restoration” until 1830.
Purgatory, the Fifth Terrace: the Avaricious and the Prodigal dated 1861
In Purgatory 20 the purview of avarice again includes great power and status. Moving from the highest rung of the ecclesiastical ladder to the highest rung of secular power, the canto takes aim at the French ruling dynasty. In fact, Hugh Capet uses the metaphor of a tree—redolent of genealogy—to characterize himself as the root of the “evil plant” that “overshadows” all the Christian lands as individual but as a dynasty.
The Engineer race symbolises the French Ruling Party in this Canto, being the imprudent and greedy. David having “cleansed” the engineers, removing their power with the black ooze. He and the subsequent result of the contamination became the evil that overshadowed the planet. Even the positions of the charred bodies emulate the figures in this piece.
Satan Presiding at the Infernal Council by John Martin c.1823–27
Satan Presiding at the Infernal Council is part of a series of 48 mezzotint engravings that British artist John Martin created between 1823 and 1827 to illustrate a new edition of Milton's Paradise Lost. It was described by in The Guardian in 2011 as "Satan holding court in what looks like a solo performance in the Albert Hall (decades in advance)".
The citadel of the necropolis is domed shaped like throne the Satan sits upon. Like David, Ridley’s Satan over the engineer city.
The circles of light present in the picture are also present in the Meet Walter commercial.
