Hostia Un Libro 2017
Queen Victoria Square, Hull, today.
City of Culture said, ‘Look Up’:
I did, and saw the Queen,
Remembering how so many times
Beneath her I had 'been’.
I thought of all the poems
I had read upon the walls
Of the Queen Victoria Toilets
With their shining porcelain stalls.
Not careless, scribbled poems,
But mounted in their frames -
Protected by some glistening glass -
With local poets’ names.
And always the attendant,
With his bucket, mop and water:
Job finished, he returns unto his office -
Like he ought ta!
So when I 'Look Up’ at the Queen,
It’s not the Queen I see -
But well-read poems on well-washed walls -
In the place I went to xxx.
(I can’t write it ….!)
