From the fourteenth century onwards, the Italian proponents of the movement we have come to call Renaissance Humanism boldly sought to uncover the textual, artistic, and material remains of antiquity: to renew the use of the Latin language by imitating the elegance of ancient Roman rhetoric; to explore the ancient sources of wisdom; and thereby …
While on diplomatic missions to Italy, Reuchlin visited the court of Lorenzo de’ Medici in Florence. There he met such leading figures of the Italian Renaissance as Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, a devotee of esoteric Jewish traditions known as Kabbalah, which he believed contained hidden evidence for the truth of Christianity. Reuchlin would go on to dedicate much of his scholarly life to Christian readings of Kabbalistic literature.
British atheist philosopher A.C. Grayling had an arresting thought about creating a Humanist Bible: How would world history have been different if the writers of the Bible used Greek and Roman philosophy instead of local religions as their sources? But they didn’t so Grayling did. The result is The Good Book: A Humanist Bible (Walker …
This article is called Atheism and the Humanist Bible. The article discusses how a British atheist Philosopher had a thought about creating a Humanist bible. That is just what he did and now today it is called “The Good Book: A Humanist Bible by Walker and Co. What he was trying to create was a secular contribution to the old-aged conversation humanity has with itself about the good. He was not trying to push aside and take away the glory from the Bible. What he did was take some of his old thoughts and wove them together to make it flow. Similar to the Bible.
This article relates to what we discussed in American Religious Diversity. When we learned about Atheist and what would come after it we learned it would be humanism. This was cool to read and was one the reasons I decided to chose this piece. I did not know that people actually were working on something such as humanism to take place after atheism. Also i chose this piece because it was interesting to see how they made the humanist bible. They literally just created the original bible but with their beliefs, pages and customs. In my opinion if you are atheist why would you want to recreate something you do not trust, nor believe in? In conclusion that is why i chose this piece. For more deeper research personally and because it related to our course and what we went over with professor Whitaker.
If it can be destroyed by the truth...
Nats and Apples
Natasha and Nathan have apples. Natasha has only two apples, while Nathan has three. Thats not fair, but we can fix it! We can: Give Natasha another apple Cut one of Nathans apples in half and give Natasha one half Take one of Nathan's apples or even take one of Nathans apples and give it to Natasha, and then he will know what it feels like to have less apples. All of these will put Nathan and Natasha at the equal number of apples (except the last one) Nathan won't like it, but thats just because he likes having more apples and wants to keep it that way. But this is equality. These are things to be done to make things fair for everyone. Nathan doesn't deserve to have more apples. But what if...
What if Natasha and Nathan had the same amount of apples, but you didn't see that Natasha ate one of her own apples? Everything you will have done to reach equality actually CREATED imbalance! This is why saying you are doing something for equality doesnt mean you are inherently doing the right thing. This is why different perspectives and views on what is and isn't equality from different people is important. This is why you can't just ignore someone who appears to have more, just because you think he is greedy and wants to keep having more. This is why there is not just one, single, correct view on what inequality is, and what needs to be done to fix it.
no that was my point. i am a christian humanist.
So you somehow reject religion and are a Christian? Neat trick.
The American Humanist Association IS an Atheist organization, no matter what weird version of humanism you practice.
