Thinking about how it seems that spells, in most magic systems, are cast by speaking them, right. You spell a spell and it's cast. So it's kind of like the magic resides in the words? In the sound?
But it's sorta funny. What a coincidence, that spells are the language people in this setting can speak. And then I was like "wait. What if spells were cast in something humans can't even speak...?"
So I raise you: Magic system in which the spells are to be cast by sounds that... human vocal chords can't make. There's a few animals that can, but they don't have the sapience to. This way the only way people can spellcast is by using machines (imagine if magic was "discovered" relatively late because of that) or musical instruments.
