SiO2 Reunion Artist: Hunter Blackwell
Hunter Blackwell is a former CAPA student from Penn Hills who is currently a senior studying glass at the Rhode Island School of Design.
“The SiO2 program was my introduction into glass as a medium but more importantly into the glass community. One of the best resources this program offered me was its accessibility to internationally recognized artists and craftsmen,” said Blackwell. While at PGC, Blackwell had the opportunity to work and learn shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the best glass artists in the world.
He built lasting relationships that later translated into opportunities to travel the world and work as an apprentice in Denmark for renowned glass artist Tobias Mohl.
Lately, he has been working with the Resident Artist, Natalie Jeremijenko, at RISD this fall on this cool project Blowing Biospheres.
"Since beginning to work with glass in 2006, the medium has brought me to many areas of interest. I now find myself making work that is strongly influenced by phenomenology, the study of perceptual experience. The optical qualities of glass offer multiple entry points into the dialogue I am attempting to have with the medium and audience through this research."
