Aloha, all- here's my comic strip "Generation Gap" that appeared in this past Sunday's Honolulu Star-Advertiser newspaper • from last Wednesday we were on the Big Island and there were a car full of crazy Pokémon Go players (which really has nothing to do with this story) - This gag came up and I decided to run with it. Thursday night, my editor, told me to adjust the words a little- so this strip is the unedited version ^_^; #jonjmurakami #calabash @staradvertiser #hurricanenames #hurricane https://www.instagram.com/p/Bn2SS2xgpZp/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=16ocer4036zja

Name that Hurricane
Do you know what season it is? Well, Summer is technically correct. "Wedding season" may also be right for the Vince Vaughn fans out there, but the answer we are looking for may be more obvious to those of you living near the ocean. It is now hurricane season, which can be a very scary time for those living in coastal regions. We certainly hope that everyone has a safe and uneventful season.
One point of interest concerning hurricanes has been their naming process. Everyone has had a friend whose name coincided with a noted hurricane, sometimes to his/her chagrin, but did you know HOW they get their names. No, it isn't always just a reviled ex-girlfriend of some employee of the National Hurricane center. Here is a quick rundown of how it's done so you can impress your friends.
Since 1953, the National Hurricane Center has generated pre-approved lists. The lists started as all female names (see ex-girlfriend theory above) and added male names in 1979. The list is in alphabetical order so that the first hurricane of the season has the letter A, and the names go on to alternate between male and female ending in W. However, the letters "Q" and "U" are omitted (no worries Quincy and Ursula) . A new list is generated every six years. This year's list goes like so: Alberto Beryl Chris Debby Ernesto Florence Gordon Helene Isaac Joyce Kirk Leslie Michael Nadine Oscar Patty Rafael Sandy Tony Valerie William
So don't say Mezzacorona never taught you anything. Again, we wish everyone a safe hurricane season. Be smart and listen to your local news man.
