New Chapter
Dear friends, family, supporter and partners, With much excitement, sprinkled with humbleness and anxiousness - October 2, will be my last day as the Director of Student Activities at the College of Alameda by October. I will be embarking on a new chapter a full-time self-employment in poetry, workshop facilitation, and education consulting. With a heavy heart, I’m leaving a position that has truly challenged and made me better advocate. I’m leaving a campus that has adopted me as their own and leaving a community of friends, students, and mentors that have surrounded me with constant support. In the short 2 years that I spent in the Bay Area, I feel like an entirely different person and will be walking away with lasting life lessons learned and lasting relationships that I will continue to cherish fiercely. As much as the bay area will be difficult to walk away from, I’ve been wanting to move back to Sacramento to be close with family again and without disclosing too much, the call for me to be back home is stronger than ever. I’m grateful to be in a position to take this leap of faith to be freelance but I also know in my heart, I’ve never been more ready. I’ve always wanted to have the financial liberty to work for myself but more importantly, work more relentlessly for community than ever. To fully commit to my art; to cultivate my vision for justice and creating the most impactful work that I know that capable of. My years in youth/community work, in nonprofit, in higher education, in grad school have all prepared me for this major pivoti. In this new capacity, I know I will have to rely on my community of mentors, friends, family, and supporters more than ever. I wanted to share of my goals as I pursue freelance work as a form of accountability and as a call for support: 1. Scale up Speaking Engagements: I’ve been blessed with speaking opportunities these last four years in my spare time, and now, I would like to open myself up to speak at all times. My calendar from this point on will be dedicated towards more speaking opportunities, workshops, spoken word performance, contracting opportunities, and artistic / education residencies for hire. Please email: [email protected] 2. Commit to Creative Collaborations: I’m excited for the ability to expand on my poetry and spoken word. I’m even more excited to commit to new creative and collaborative ventures. I welcome all sorts of new proposals! Please feel free to connect with me or if you know someone or some group that would benefit from my work; introductions and referrals would be much appreciated. I’m open to short-term and/or part time opportunities with great fit in poetry, videography, business ventures, critical classroom curriculum development, etc. 3. Self Taught Syllabus: I’m committing myself to being more of a student than ever and studying poetry and entrepreneurship to bring my craft to the next level. Based on a great book that Tracy Nguyen referred me “The Art of Unconventional Living” - I’m creating a self-taught course syllabus with learning outcomes, required readings, project deadlines to commit to my growth as an artist and entrepreneur. I would love to learn and chat with others who have gone and/or currently going down this path. If anyone is interested in doing this self taught course with me for accountability... holla!! 4.Summer Gamechanger: While I’m booking out the rest of the academic year (Fall-Spr), Summer 2018 will be time for me to undertake something brand new and challenging projects. I planning on do creative retreats and write more than ever. However, some ideas that I had in mine were doing a artist/education residency for a non-profit or University. I’ve wanted to develop a curriculum for “Deconstructing Masculinity Men of Color Retreat”. I invite anyone reading this to partake and follow me on this journey. A lot more to come so stay up on my social media and check out www.fongtran.com
