De term, ook wel Hyperart Thomasson genoemd, is in de jaren 80 bedacht door de Japanse kunstenaar Akasegawa Genpei en is genoemd naar een Amerikaanse honkballer. Gary Thomasson diende voor een record bedrag een 2-jarig contract uit bij een Japanse club, terwijl hij niet in actie kwam.
