Day 3: hypothermia (Lance)

Warning: slight gore/blood mentions
Lance was a pro at ice skating. He loved the cold weather more than anything. So when the lake near his house froze over, he immediately sent a text to his friends to get their asses over to his house so they could have a skating party. Hunk and Pidge were good skaters; this Lance knew for a fact, and so was Shiro; The two of them had met at a skating competition, after all. The only one he was unsure of was his own boyfriend, Keith. He’d never seen Keith skate before. So, of course, the second Keith got there, Lance dragged him onto the ice, only to have him fall against Lance’s chest.
“Well, well. So the mullet can’t skate, huh?” Lance teased. Keith got off his chest and stood still on the ice, dusting himself off.
“Slow your roll, Pretty boy,” he protested. “I can too skate. You just dragged me on and I wasn’t ready.” Lance rolled his eyes.
“Oh yeah? Prove it. I dare you to do a double, right here, right now. If you do one, I will too.” He said. Keith smirked.
“You got yourself a deal.” Keith skated around the Frozen lake and leaped into the air, doing a triple instead of a double and sticking the landing. Lance’s jaw dropped as Keith skated back over to him, a sly smile painted across his face.
“Well, a deal’s a deal, Lance. Your turn.” Lance straightened up and huffed as he skated past Keith. He hadn’t done a double in a while, so when he did, he nearly fell on his butt when he landed. Keith snickered for a moment, but gazed down as Lance shakily got up and his eyes widened in fear.
“Lance, MOVE!!!” Lance looked down to see the ice under him was thinner than he expected and was starting to crack under him. He went to move, but a loud crack was heard, followed by a splash, and suddenly he was laying on the ice next to a large cracked hole in the ice. He thought he was okay, but when he saw tints of red on the ice and Keith missing, he panicked.
“KEITH!!!” He stick his hand into the icy water, not finding another one to grab onto.
This was when Lance did the only logical thing a boyfriend would do; he jumped into the cold water. He swam under and looked around, seeing Keith slowly sinking towards the bottom, a faint trail of red flowing upwards. Lance quickly swam down, grabbed Keith, and swam up to the surface, gasping for air. He was greeted with Shiro’s prosthetic hand sticking out for him to grab. Lance grabbed it and the two were pulled out of the freezing water.
“What the hell happened?! One minute we hear you two laughing, the next you were screaming for Keith and you were both under!!” Pidge said. Lance was too cold to respond fully.
“K-k-k-Keith-th-th... h-h-he’s-s... h-h-hurt-t-t...” Lance said through chattering teeth. Shiro looked down to see Keith’s Head dripping with blood; his lips were dark blue, almost purple, and he was too pale for comfort.
“Okay, okay. We’ll get him inside and fix you two up. Hunk, could you help out Lance while Pidge and I take care of Keith?” Shiro asked. Hunk nodded, and Shiro scooped up his brother into his arms, and before they even started walking, Shiro’s face paled and he laid Keith on the ground, sticking his human hand under Keith’s nose, only to find no air coming out.
“No, no, no, no, no...” he whispered. He immediately started the chest compressions that he’d learned in military school.
“Come on, come on...” He was getting worried until Keith gasped and started coughing. The water in his lungs thankfully came out of his mouth. Shiro sighed and scooped Keith into his arms again as he passed out, and just like that, him and Pidge were running inside, Keith laying unconsciously in Shiro’s arms. Lance watched the three of them run to his parent’s house and wrapped his arms around himself.
“Come on, bud. Let’s get you inside an-“ Hunk started, but stopped when he heard broken sobs come from Lance.
“I-I-I-it’s-s m-my f-f-fault-t-t...” he cried. Hunk rubbed Lances arm comfortingly.
“No it’s not, Lance. You didn’t know the ice was weak. Keith was lucky to have been there, otherwise you might’ve drowned.” He said. Lance sniffled helplessly and looked up at Hunk, who gave him a caring smile.
“Let’s get you inside and warmed up, okay?” Lance nodded in response, and Hunk helped him up and steadied him as they walked back to Lance’s house.
Lance’s family wasn’t there, seeing as they were out sledding out of town, so the five had the house to themselves for the weekend. Hunk helped Lance to the living room where the fireplace was. He sat Lance down on the couch and started the fire. Lance felt the warmth and just let it seep in; he hadn’t realized how cold he actually was until he felt the heat of the fire. Or how tired. He placed his head against Hunk’s shoulder and quickly wound up falling asleep once Hunk places a blanket on the two of them.
Lance woke up with someone shaking his shoulder.
“Five more minutes...” He said, his speech slurring.
“Unless you don’t want to see your boyfriend waking up, I’d suggest waking up.” Pidge said, which immediately got Lance up.
“He’s awake?” Lance asked.
“Not yet, but Shiro said he’s coming to-“ Lance was already walking to the guest room where he and Keith were staying for the week. There he found Shiro sitting next to Keith, who was lying in bed. His lips were still blue and he looked a little pale, and his head was bandaged, but other than that, he seemed to be okay. Lance sat on the end of the bed and rubbed Keith’s leg as he woke up.
“L-lanc-ce...?” Keith stuttered. Lance smiled and nodded.
“Welcome back, Samurai.” Shiro said. Keith looked over from Shiro then back to Lance, his eyes hazy. Keith groaned and held his forehead.
“Wh-what-t h-hap-ppened?” He asked. Keith’s teeth were chattering and he was shaking.
“You saved me, that’s what, dumbass.” Lance said playfully. Keith smiled, but quickly frowned as his body racked with chills. He closed his eyes and wrapped his arms around himself.
“C-c-cold-d...” Lance sighed and glanced to Shiro.
“Is it okay if we move him to the Living room? There’s a fire going and it might warm him up a bit.” Shiro looked at Keith for a second then sighed.
“I guess. He won’t get any warmer in here. I already turned up the heat in here and gave him a few extra blankets, but even that’s not working, so why not?” Lance nodded as he picked Keith up into his arms and carried him back to the living room, where a warm fire was blazing in the fireplace. Lance sat himself and Keith down on the couch and wrapped them up in a blanket, Keith snuggled close to his chest.
“Feeling warmer yet?” He asked, feeling Keith still shivering. Nonetheless, Keith nodded.
“S-still cold, b-but it’s g-getting there... th-this is n-nice, though...” Keith said, fatigue clear in his tone.
“Get some sleep, Keith. You sound exhausted.” Lance said, but Keith was already out before he finished his sentence, softly snoring. Lance smiled and planted a kiss on Keith’s head as the others walked in. Pidge snickered and started snapping photos, while the others silently giggled to themselves. Lance quietly shushed them and shooed them away, rubbing Keith’s back as he did so. The others left and Lance and Keith stayed there, with Keith quietly snoring on Lances chest and Lance rubbing Keith’s back to keep him warm. Lance couldn’t help but wonder how lucky he got to have Keith in his life.
