It’s his own fault ; they had rules, Jaskier was to stay at the camp, Griffins were dangerous and unpredictable, much like most creatures the monster hunter faced. These rules were in place to keep the bard safe, to keep Geralt’s plate clear of any unnecessary distractions — but the witcher was always so stingy with details and just once the poet wanted to see the creature with his own eyes, describe one truly in song instead of through the eyes of his beloved witcher.
He’d assumed hiding behind the tree line would be enough cover, that if he kept his lithe frame pressed closely against the bark the griffin would be too concerned with his foe to notice — but that hadn’t been the case. He could blame the wind, the gust that carried his scent toward the hulking creature and forced it’s change of focus ; but the fact remained had the bard stayed put none of this would have happened.
Beast lay slain several feet away, but it’s no one’s concern right now. Lyrical fingers cling to abdomen, desperately trying to keep his insides from their adamant march outwards. He coughs, blood spurting fourth from pink petals as cornflower hues seems to glaze. Shock is a marvel and does well to take most of the sting away ; but that isn’t to say there is no pain. It’s a dull buzz in his stomach, just above belly button, staining his lilac outfit crimson as the blotches continue to spread. He breathes, or attempts to finding air difficult to fit within lungs that seem to be filling with something far more viscus.
“ —working on it— . ” he manages between rasps, flicker of a smile falling against half elven features as more blood spatters fourth from lips, it’s red river cascading over chin. “ —I’m s—sorry—“ he chokes out, oceanic hues riddled with sorrow and regret. “I just— wanted to s—see—“ pain is fleeting quickly and already vision is becoming clouded, peppered with dots of black and what seems like it might be a form of glitter. Jaskier doesn’t want to die, no sane person would — but he resolves if this is his final moment he’s content to spend it here, in Geralt’s arms.
