My two cents on the Frankenstein

I recently read Frankenstein and in English no less (not my native tongue btw) and I have opinions.

The general plot is told through the letters of an explorer named Walton. He writes these letters to his sister and recounts his experiences and the life story of a half frozen Victor Frankenstein. This frame setting of finding Victor chasing his creation near the North Pole is to me extremely out of place and kind of kills my suspension of disbelief. The rest of the story stays kind of grounded and explores just different areas and nations in Europe, but the whole time in the back of my mind I'm reminded that Victor NEEDS to eventually find himself travelling the glaciers of the North Sea which always took me out of the story.

The meat of the book is just Victors own narrations of his entire life story, including unnecessarily detailed accounts of his and others' family history. To me personally the 200 year old language was very difficult to read (again not my mother tongue) and it made the long sentences, accounts of family drama, and descriptions of sights kind of a drag to read. But finding words I didn't recognize was honestly interesting along with words that had changed meaning such as 'quit' and 'intercourse' having changed meaning.

I notice I've been pretty negative so far which really isn't my intention since I honestly enjoyed Frankenstein. The concept and story were interesting. Following the slow mental decline of both Victor and the monster was interesting as they tormented each other by merely existing. The monsters narrative parts were also very interesting. His narrative had clear themes of not judging people by looks alone since he was deep down pure of heart. Of course having good intentions does not excuse killing multiple people and devoting your entire existence to tormenting one man.

I especially found it interesting how the common narrative around Frankenstein seems to be that Victor created a monster but was more the monster himself but in my opinion that's not really true. They are both monsters. Victor could not bear his very own creation existing just because he wasn't the most pleasing to the eye and the monster assumed the worst of every human purposefully destroying everything Victor valued in life one by one. They both in their narratives painted each other as the embodiment of evil and themselves as a good person done wrong. They both refuse to blame themselves.

Thus I think rather than kindness or judgement being the only theme of Frankenstein I think the book wants to ask the question of if bad people deserve happiness. The two narrative foils are both pretty undeniably bad people and want the other to suffer while they thrive. They both desire happiness in spite of their wrongdoings. In my opinion they both also deserve it to an extent but only after an effort to correct their wrongdoings or punishment. Also the monsters crimes seem to often be completely forgotten even though he was a genuine murderer though of course Victor might play up his cruelty in his narration

Also I think Victors and Elizabeth's relationship is incest and I'm pretty disappointed with how underdeveloped she was left. And also if I like horribly misinterpreted something inform me.
