where folks get The Day of the Doctor wrong is by saying "oh they retconned him destroying Gallifrey. that's stupid!" when that's technically not what happened. for the first seven seasons of the tv show, the Doctor did very much destroy Gallifrey.
the actual retcon is that the story thus far has been taking place in a fully realized hypothetical future timeline instantaneously created by a Time Lord superweapon.
the twist isn't that the War Doctor forgot he didn't do a thing he thought he did, the twist is that the last seven seasons kinda weren't real, which is insane and much worse depending on who you ask lmao
