the “dead in the water”/“advanced thanatology” thing where it’s both instances of dean talking to a child experiencing traumatic loss of speech who is compulsively drawing Plot Relevant Images totally could be incidental if not for the fact that I know steve yockey would do something fucked up like that. he said remember the last time this happened and they reunited the mother with her son? remember when dean pulled himself out of the water just before drowning? the mother will see her son again in a body bag. dean will die, temporarily, but he will die. everyone will die. this is what grief feels like — no longer wanting to feel anything at all. he sticks the needle into his heart in the house of the doctor who treated every patient with a lobotomy. what good is a hero who can’t save anybody.
