i’m just typing this out for myself to try and comprehend so don’t mind me

marian, the main character 1. works at some research firm, has a boyfriend named peter and a roommate named ainsley 2. marian meets a man named duncan door knocking for her job and they have an affair 3. peter proposes during a dinner where ainsley tries to get pregnant by a friend 4. marian disassociates when peter recounts a story of him hunting a rabbit but says yes to the proposal 5. marian begins to empathize with meat and refuses to eat it 6. there’s an engagement party where peter makes marian dress up really fancily and duncan is invited and says something along the lines of i didn’t know this was a masquerade which makes marian realize that peter is metaphorically devouring her like steak 7. she bakes a pink cake in the shape of a woman and dares peter to eat it telling him “this is what you really want” 8. peter leaves, marian eats the cake? duncan comes over and eats the cake too

so... she was really devouring herself the whole time? society was devouring her? society caused her to devour herself? but then why did duncan eat her too... fuck man
