He didn’t know what came over him. Perhaps it was just a feeling of the right moment and the right time that led Saul to be brave and kiss her. He had wanted to do it for a while now, having grown more than fond of Caitlin but also her children as well. In that moment, it simply felt like the right thing to do. The fact that she hadn’t pushed him away gave him hopes that perhaps she did feel the same way he did after all.
Distracted by her daughter’s voice, Saul watched Josie for a moment, smiling despite his racing heart. She was a great kid, Saul had told her so before. Still, soon enough he was focused on Cate once more. “Yeah, perhaps we should talk about it,” he agreed quietly, his features remaining gentle. Josie was fortunately still playing on her own, giving them a moment to really talk. “I… I probably should have asked beforehand but I couldn’t help myself. I’ve been wanting to do that for a while now.” Longer than he dared to admit.
“I love you, Cate. I have for a while now. And I love your kids. And if you’ll have me, I’d really like to be a proper part of your lives. I know it’s a lot but I needed to say it.”
