Crash and Burn
The car speeding at Valerie came out of nowhere, and hit hers hard enough to flip it twice. She didn't know the people in the other car, maybe they were drunk or high or something, but that didn't matter. What mattered was the searing heat in her back and legs, and the heat that faded from her legs as the rescuers cut her free. She never saw who saved her, and she didn't know what had happened until she woke up in the hospital a few days later, with a nurse explaining to her what had happened. "Miss Begovich, you've been in a car crash. Do you remember your name? Do you know what happened there?" the perky nurse said.
"I'm Valerie Begovich, I was in a crash. It was so hot on my legs and my back, so hot. Then it stopped in my legs. What happened?" she mumbled, rubbing her head.
The nurse explained that Valerie needed a few surgeries, and luckily, one of the girls in the car that hit her was a perfect match for her organs. Valerie needed a lung and a heart, and extra tissue to reduce scarring from road rash. The nurse smiled again and flipped through the papers on her clipboard, then said, "Oh, and your spine was severely injured. You might not be able to walk again." She said it with a smile on her lips, and Valerie felt crushed. She was heartbroken. Her cross country career was over, and she'd have to spend her senior year in a wheelchair. This was not happening.
Valerie spent the next week mourning her legs and the lives the crash took. She sobbed quietly, so the nurses wouldn't worry. She took her medication and spoke to the therapist and did everything she was told to do. She was empty, and just couldn't handle this. She couldn't deal without her legs.
