Building OC's is so fun ❤️‍🔥 I'm still dreaming up the full character design for my girl, but this song made something finally click!!! Prime in Disguise Bumblebee's "leitmotif (of sorts)"* in my mind has long been chiptune, inspired by his vocoder in Prime. I can't fully describe the surreal feel of chiptune, but to me, the low, vacillating resonance coupled with the higher, merry melody capture his character so well. If you want to get the feel for it, I think it is best heard in "Halcyon" by Owl City (which I hear as Bumblebee's teenage arc) and "Focus" by Chipzel (which I hear as Bumblebee's young adult arc). *(I know "leitmotif" is not the correct term; really, what I truly speak of simply the voice of an instrument, but the term "leitmotif" is close enough to conveying what I wish, so I use it as shorthand. Music theory people, don't get mad at me; I'm using this term wrong on PURPOSE) So what does this song ^ have to do with anything? "Our Hearts Collide" by iamsleepless has been circulating my playlists for a bit now, inspiring me to write the scene(s) ;) where Bumblebee first meets this unknown sparkling and subsequently chooses to open his spark to her. I always loved the music, but today it finally hit me why it's so special.

It combines Bumblebee's "leitmotif" with hers!!! I didn't know my little sparkling even had a "leitmotif" (of sorts), but hearing it now in a new light, I can see how it connects to her character design! And it's inspiring me to design her bot mode! Yay! :D I don't even know the proper name for this instrument voice, but the best way I can describe it is: "It's Owl City's." You hear it all across his albums; it's instantly recognizable even if it is indescribable. It dances up and down across the background delightfully in his newest cover, "Gone." (You can hear it whistle at 1:06, and swing back and forth at 3:42, most strongly.) Anyway, this instrument's voice is notably higher, softer, and more whimsical than the deeper, earthy, almost vibrating chiptune voice that I associate with Bumblebee; but it doesn't clash with it. The way I hear it, the sparkling's musical voice laughs and soars like a cirrus cloud drifting the open sky, while Bumblebee's musical voice rumbles like pavement shaken up by miles of cars zooming over open road...but the instruments actually blend well together. And that brings me back to "Our Hearts Collide." The song starts with something more earthy, an instrument closer to what I hear as Bumblebee's musical voice. But, faint in the background are the soft, higher notes. Her musical voice. A whisper of what's to come. Then, at :44, that looping melody ends and a beeping one sets in. Like a passcode being entered into a keypad. Bumblebee's spark has a lock on the door, so not just anyone can get in. At :59, the "beeping" deepens; the electronic button pressing gets louder. Like someone is knocking on the door of Bumblebee's spark, demanding entry...and she just figured out the code. At 1:14, the original melody returns, as if all is normal...but then...at 1:43...the melody transforms. Higher, softer, more whimsical notes flit around and around, completely altering the song as we know it! (If that isn't my sparkling, I don't know what is!) ✨ This even happens halfway through the song! A crucial turning point! At 1:58, lower notes (more like Bumblebee's chiptune) of a differing melody take center stage, circling anxiously, as if trying to rediscover the original melody. As if trying to remember who they are. All anxiety fades out at 2:27; and there...there, the original song returns. The original melody dances again. Bumblebee has found his spark is intact...but someone has left her mark on it. At 2:57, her voice returns. 💙 This melody no longer feels out of place, because we have heard it before. At 3:13, the little sparkling's musical voice dances alongside the passcode beeping we heard before. Now, instead of the little sparkling frantically pressing the buttons, trying to crack the code to get in...now, Bumblebee is resetting the passcode himself, and the keypad beeps not to keep her out of his spark...but to seal her in there forever, as their hearts collide. T-T IT'S SO GOOD!!! Not only do the "leitmotifs (of sorts)" aka musical voices fit my characters perfectly...but this song is so well-crafted that even if I had no characters to associate with it, if I listened closely, I could hear the story in the music itself. I'm very impressed with the artist for their musical storytelling. Anyway, I am very excited about this for my story and my girl! I understand her character design more now that I know what her musical voice is! I'm so excited to design her bot mode and try to capture her character just right. Can't wait to share her story someday <3 Oh my goodness, and now I am thinking about how some clouds really are like tire tracks in the sky. That's such good symbolism for her character T-T but I can't talk about it because SPOILERS
