A Case on Ian Duff; Mischaracterized Cheater or Complex Relationship Dynamics?

Believe it or not cheating can be a complex social setback from a lack of communication from one or both partners. While yes, the most common reason or even excuse of a partner cheating is the default "I fell out of love for you and didn't want to bother telling you".

But lets say two people in a relationship, both had busy lives and they barely had time to spend intimate time with each other. Say ones persons job was hard and they were trying their damnedest to get financial support or reach what seemed like a tough goal. They may seem emotionally unavailable and you try to get at least a word but they were exhausted from the hours they put in just to get by. You as the partner would feel isolated and hurt and in order to fill that void you start hanging out with other people. Yeah it starts off casual, but you soon meet someone who feels as if they can sweep you off your feet and make you feel like someone cares for you.

You'll read that and go "Well I wouldn't do that! I'd just talk to my partner about how they were making me feel!" Here's the thing, you tried and your partner after getting off an emotionally exhausting day has but up a wall in order to wind down. It's easier said than done. You can talk to a wall all you want, but it's a wall, and it's not going to budge.

The example story I gave isn't what I think or theorize is what exactly happened. I'm sure plenty of people are speculating what may have really happened. The example is meant to give the perspective of common miscommunication between partners and how a situation of a relation is more complex. It's neither partners fault, but both aren't completely innocent. The partner who had work should have checked in with their partner every now and then, instead of indulging in their own world in order to escape. The partner who felt isolated shouldn't have indulged in the thought of someone else fixing their emotional hole. There can be plenty of XYZ reasons why, both parties can be valid and invalid but in the end, there wasn't any communication from either party.

How does this relay to Ian? Well you made it this far so let's get into it.

I want those of you who have either been a victim of cheating or knew someone who has been in the past to keep it in the past. Yes you have been unjustified and doesn't mean that this blog is a means to have your feelings unjustified. Maybe the person was just that, a literal horrible person who did ungodly things but I'm not talking about those kind of people nor would I ever excuse the kind of people who legitimately harm others. This is a fictional character who has not harmed you or put your life in danger and if you are someone who believes that well I'm sorry to say, you need professional help. If you are getting a raw visceral reaction at just reading all of this so far, take a breather and return or ignore this post when you come back.

As those who have been in the fandom longer, all we knew was that Ian had cheated on the MC. The reason at the time we weren't sure, but most people, even me speculated it had to do with Ians career path of getting into Hollywood to be an actor and sleeping with a producer. Whether this was a willing or unwilling thing wasn't talked about so much until recently.

People who aren't a fan of Ian, I have seen tend to not want to romance him because of just the cheating aspect of it. However if later in Ian's romance line or overall story that it wasn't completely his fault and that if he was either manipulated and or coerced, then all the people who didn't like him or hated his guts would instantly switch up. Hell, I know I wasn't fully on board with Ian even making my spotify playlist theory but I even said that something wasn't quiet right. I'll admit I probably unknowingly enabled peoples despise of him more to a cringe degree. And even looking back, I only understood and put myself in the shoes of someone who was being unfair, judgmental and cold. Not as the partner I am today who wants to have that uncomfortable talk in order to grow and learn. It wasn't until people were showing more and more of their hate that I started to think back on actions that I made over a decade ago and how people used to say similar things to me. Were these people saying this to my face? No, no one knows who tf I am and if they do, don't fully understand the complexities of it all and are fortunate to not have that experience. And I think that's what people don't understand, that it can be complex and confusing.

There's only really a small percentage of people who genuinely do regret what they've done and who've they've hurt, and even a smaller amount who want to make things right again.

I think the challenge Ian has in store is in fact communication. Lets be honest, before he had a glow up, he was a nerd. A socially awkward nerd who wasn't good at his words and perhaps going for an acting career was a way to strengthen that weakness. I think that his word choices in the demo on those voice messages was supposed to be an example of him yes genuinely wanting to fix things, but he's wording it the wrong way. A good example would be;

"I hurt you and I can't fix that kind of damage, I want to make things right between us and show you that I still love and care about you."

But because of the possibility of Ian being manipulated and coerced and possibly having some kind of trauma. He may be subconsciously jumbling the genuine thought of wanting to repair the relationship with literal words like fix. Not realizing that it might sound manipulative and cruel, even to the extent that implying that the MC was and is imperfect and broken on an emotional level. Perhaps he's not fully understanding just how damaging this has affected them.

"Please! I can fix us!"

I'll be honest, those kinds of words can have the complete opposite meaning even coming from a good place in your heart. But when you are desperate to make things right with your partner, you tend to not really think about what you're saying, especially when you are emotionally wound up.

Also, I want to leave you with a thought to sit on:

If Ian was someone who cheated and isn't someone isn't a manipulator and isn't known to be one towards the MC. Why would Ian call the MC the moment Ian had done the act? If it was absolutely not to cause emotional trauma, then why would he? A majority of cheaters choose to not communicate to their partners. What is the thing we all do after something terrible has happened to us and we need the person we care about the most to talk to about what has happened to us? Maybe the MC as their own individual person isn't completely without fault and the situation is more complicated than what we all know at this time and moment.

Something's Wrong With Sunny Day Jack Spotify Playlist Theories! Part Two 18+ Only

Following Contents May be Sensitive! Please read at your own risk! This will be focusing on Ian's songs going into analyzing lyrics, history, personality and overall meaning for the character and lore at this time and moment.

This playlist reminded me of my boy band craze and my favorite early to mid 2000's songs that I grew up with. It's been hard to keep focused especially with Misery and my compulsive urge to listen to Misery x CPR x Reese's Puffs and stim, curse my mentally ill pea brain. I believe this is the era that really defines Ian in a nutshell, much like how Jack’s is a collective of songs from the 70′s and mainly 80′s since that was the time that Jack/Joseph had been alive before his time. Looking at he persons attractiveness was his first thoughts. This was probably someone who had absolute looks and popular amongst their peers. Ian still slightly being a shy-ish man has no idea how to process his thoughts but only the ones that he knows with the MC, "No one like you" using it as a hook and sinker to this person. Complimenting them by looks and intellect, absolute simp mode going on. Is this the first moment we glimpse into Ian's psyche? Just crazy enough to do something complete against the MC that destroys their relationship? Eventually running his own sanity into the ground for his actions that he regrets? One in a Million- Bosson Ugh this feels like one of those songs that one guy uses to get a partner back or get a partner by saying all these buzz words that just don't work. Like that one guy who says "You're unique and special" to 20 different people when hitting on them on college campus. Did you do that Ian? Were you really that guy? Especially if he was currently dating MC, then that would make that super icky yucky That may have been true to MC but should've been ONLY with MC to be his "One in a Million" if he really felt that way Tearin’ up My Heart- *NSYNC (To all my 2000′s era peeps, how many of ya had that NSYNC phase? I know I did, but that’s besides the point!) Definitely giving off the fact how Ian doesn't like to be alone for a good bit. Perhaps he's really feeling that comfort when he's in the MC's company in general and he can't take the feeling that he wants to be in a relationship and not just as friends? Also the possibility that Ian may have had some singing lessons since a common aspect in many actors is also their singing capabilities that may get them roles in musical movies where they must act and sing as well such as Justin Timberlake and the multiple movies he’s stared in.  Invisible- Clay Aiken Ian really be wondering what MC is up to...like a concerning amount...He's really trying to get their attention but fails over an over basically being ignored. It sure is getting to him huh? He wishes to see them again and clearly misses them, but it’s still hella concerning since it’s like stalking which, considering how Ian would go out of his way to travel back to MC after everything he did, I don’t think it would be without question that Ian may have that potential to do just that. What’s Your Name?- Jesse McCartney (You know, after playing Kingdom Hearts I can’t think of Jesse McCartney the same way again)  Probably the first interactions with Ian had with MC. It sounds stalker like, seeing MC literally go everywhere to every place without them knowing until he eventually gets the courage to ask them what they're name is and get to know them before MC goes on about on their daily life not really paying attention around their atmosphere. Kinda has that comical aspect  like in an anime. The one guy who goes on a tangent in front of their interest and then the other person just straight up leaves completely oblivious. When You’re Gone- Avril Lavigne A big sad, lonely Ian after MC literally just left him. MC was in a big rush to leave once they heard what happened that they left some things without realizing they did. Leaving Ian to have that sliver of a reminder of MC. Should've cleaned up better MC because now he's got something that he'll keep as a constant reminder. Fueling more of his want for MC and clinging on to the hope that something will eventually work out. Misery- Maroon 5 (Reese’s Puffs Reese’s Puffs) This feels like Ian is going back and forth between moving on and still wanting the MC. From "Leave me be and I'll set you free" to "Why won't you answer me?" contradicting himself. Like pick one! The solace is killing you?! Why won't you answer me?! Got a lot of nerve there Ian to say all that- Like he has that small micro sized right to say that- He's definitely gonna try his best to get MC back no matter what. It’s like he’s playing hard to get but it’s like worse considering everything that he’s done and it’s like...The fuck. Howling to the Moon- Bruno Mars Yup, Ian's going through that big down slide after the break up. He's so down that he's literally having imaginary conversations with the MC as if they were still with him. Absolute denial and trying to comprehend his longing to MC after everything. Plus this song reminds me of the “Talking to the Moon” meme where the guy sings and he’s recording and when he plays back, it sounds awful. Then again that’s my own sense of humor talking It’s Gonna Be Me- *NSYNC (I'm maulding ya'll-) The absolute arrogance, the absolute gaslighting- "Everything little thing I do, never seems enough for you" guilt tripping. "You're just to blind to see, but in the end you know its gonna be me" What gives him the right to say that? Then again if Ian did have a partial career as a singer and songwriter, and had some kind of single one man boy band album, he may have written songs that reflected his past relationship with the MC, or at least a thought that Ian may have had at the mere thought of MC being in another relationship with someone else. (You Drive Me) Crazy- Brittany Spears How Ian feels toward the MC and probably has been his thoughts since they've known each other and is accepting that he really is crazy for MC. So deeply infatuated and in love that it does really make you question if he was this in love, then what happened? Why did he do, what he did? Ian swears up and down that MC was really the one and that he needed them, but why did he cheat? Lucky- Brittany Spears "This is a story about a boy named Ian~" Ian has made it in the big leagues and has in some way moved on with the occasional crying from sheer loneliness from not being in a relationship. Really starting to feel that regret to what he did to MC. I’m sure he’s had some time to reflect on his time growing as an actor and he may have regrets, however the way he goes about it isn’t exactly the “right” way I Want It That Way- Backstreet Boys Despite Ian messing it all up, he still has MC deep in his heart and wonders why MC wants to be apart, it's because it hurt them and going back into the relationship could just be another mistake...or could that all change? Then again this could be another song Ian may have on his album and this is just the mix of his feelings along with the façade and Hollywood marketing of making him this bad boy who longs for a relationship even though MC (and we the audience) know the kind of person he was before his road to fame. Can’t Help Falling in Love-  A*Teens (Cover) (Again, another song you can’t listen on Spotify anymore but you can search for it on YouTube) I can imagine this playing at Ian's and MC's high school prom and played the moment Ian first really realized he's fallen in love with MC. It’s pure and innocent, and I think it really shows that butterflies in your stomach feeling when you’ve started to really falling hard for someone you grew up with and would want them to take your hand and go anywhere as long as you were together and had each other, because remember. Only fools rush in. Dynamite- BTS (Don't worry Ian, I like BTS too, you're secret is safe with me for now) Ian is really blowing up in Hollywood, or perhaps it's just a front he puts out into the public now that he's an actor and for positive publicity. He may have a manager who may be in charge of what his appearance is towards his fans and the world in general. That’s he’s this super hot guy with swagger, with this extroverted personality who’s ready to go out into the world and really show everyone what he’s all about. Mrs. Potato Head- Melanie Martinez (I'm pretty sure I've seen a pic of assuming to be Ian's mom implying some form of guilt tripping for him get famous especially with his looks) Ian probably felt self conscious about his looks in fear in disappointing his family members. Or perhaps the sacrifices Ian took in order to get at least somewhere towards his acting career, even if it meant crossing a line? Hoping MC would understand what he did because he didn't have the confidence in himself so he took matters into his own hands? It’s not a good excuse but it’s a grim thought to think that there is some dark aspects to Ian’s past that he may have not been too forthcoming despite being the MC’s childhood friend. You’d be surprised that the person you thought you knew deep down would keep the amount of dark history with them. Complicated- Avril Lavigne (Okay so after Mrs. Potato Head JambeeBot/Sauce added five new songs to the playlist so these are fresh compared to the original post I made months ago about these songs) So two things come to mind. 1, Ian still doesn’t understand why MC may still be mad at him about him cheating or 2, Ian is noticing the changes that MC is going through with Jack with him taking more control over MC’s mindset in general. Uptown Girl- Westlife (Cover) Ooohhhhhh man, the fact that this is just a modern boyband version of Billy Joel’s Uptown Girl has got me feeling that if Jack hears and see’s Ian perform a song that Jack has some sort of recollection towards, he would roll his eyes and feel absolutely disgusted. This song could also be the reference that Ian will be playing as Jack in the SunnyTime Crew Show reboot and how Ian will be nothing more than a blatant cash grabbing attempt and cheap imitation of the real Jack. Another Night- Alex Christensen Ian is constantly dreaming about MC, but perhaps it’s just dreams where they’re still together, or perhaps in these dreams he has conversations towards MC, like those kind of dreams where it may be unresolved trauma and depending on the kind of trauma you’re talking to the person about how you feel and what you really want to say to them but for Ian he wakes up only to remember that he’s alone still and everything that happened was only just a dream. Can’t Fight the Moonlight- LeAnn Rimes I’ve seen a few fanart here and there where if Ian was part of the Sunny Time Crew Show, that he would be a character that would be associated with the Moon given the references in this playlist so far. The lyrics to this song is menacing and off putting to a point. Perhaps this is just a hint of a possible possession from Jack and that mix of Ian and Jack. He Loves You Not- Dream You ever do that thing where you pluck a flowers petals and did “He/She loves me, He/She loves me not”? But this is like Ian being intimidating about MC about who they might see as a challenge. This could be about Ian more or less being the jealous type and thinking that he knows what’s best for MC. Perhaps does see what the other person is trying to do with MC but he’s still reluctant to still pursue MC. Final Synopsis: I may be a biased himbo bimbo but man there are just some things that don't sit quite right with Ian, whether if it’s just his history that’s been public to us or just my own personal experience. He's the kind of guy who boils my blood and I don't blame anyone else who feel that way too, and that may be just the surface level of Ian. I do see a possible Ian route that the MC forgives him to an extent that leads us back into the thing Ian had always regretted and wanted nothing more than to be back with the MC, perhaps working more on a healthy relationship dynamic and communication to better the relationship. Wonder how Jack would take this shocking revelation? It breaks my heart just thinking of how hurt he'll be. And I wonder just how susceptible Ian might be if Jack does take the opportunity to possess him. Perhaps Jack smooth talks his way to letting Ian be possessed with the promise of finally being physically being with MC once and for all, but the price of his soul.
