How does a gifted student in Switzerland in the 1980s apply his talents? On precision mechanics and watchmaking, of course.
But at the time the watch industry was facing a challenging period and its four-century dominance was coming to an end as digital began taking over. This triggered Bruno Michel, a student at University of Zurich, to switch his field from mechanics and electronics to biochemistry where he carried out a PhD.
Eventually, he would come to realize that his previously acquired knowhow wasn’t time wasted as he developed smart robots to reach even more accurate results on a much wider library of genetically engineered enzymes he was studying — completely unheard of at the time.
Thankfully for IBM and for the engineering community, these two experiences triggered his fascination with integrating all kinds of functionality into smaller and smaller highly efficient devices.
Thirty-plus years later Michel, a National Academy of Engineering inductee, now leads an IBM Research team in developing tiny, powerful computing devices – some so small they can eventually be fixed in the ear canal or worn as a sub-millimeter thin patch no more intrusive than a Band-Aid.
These devices are part of an initiative known as the Internet of the Body, which is part of the IBM Frontiers Institute, a collaborative effort bringing together IBM scientists with clients to work side by side on forward thinking science with implications for business and society.

In Dublin, scientists from IBM Research - Ireland and University College Dublin (UCD) are developing and testing a Cognitive In-Car Companion as part of an EU-funded project called ENABLE-S3 – an effort to accelerate the validation and application of highly automated systems in several domains, including automotive.
The Cognitive In-Car Companion is designed to look after the driver and the passengers while being as unobtrusive as possible. Using historical data as well as real-time data from in- and outside the car, the companion predicts the driver’s intentions while being aware of the environment and the context of the driver’s journey. If the companion foresees any difficult or risky situations, it assists the driver in avoiding them.
