What is your biggest regret?

“There is no…,” Ismaire began, fighting the urge to scrap this slip of paper altogether. She balled it up and tried again with a bit more honesty behind her motions. This could do all parties well, she thought. Perhaps they could learn something from my mistakes.

“Nothing will ever haunt me more than the times I chose to spend away from my son, blinded by the allure of a dream. He needed me to be there for him as he grew, to hold his hand as we walked, to kiss his knee when he fell, to teach him all the little things only a mother ever could. But I didn’t realize a single bit of it until he had already slipped right through my fingers…” A moment of pause was spent rolling the ink pen between her fingers. Perhaps she had divulged too much. Her body was beginning to tense.

With a bittersweet grin, Ismaire threw a sly glance at a portrait of her son sitting on a corner of her desk. It was of him at his coronation, yet another event in his life she had missed out on. In it he looked so regal – hard to believe now that she had caught a glimpse of the true nature of the Gambler King.

“Now look at him,” Ismaire concluded, mostly in jest.
