I've gotten so many random people because I have been through the game about 15 times.

I'm pretty sure you actually get affection just rom interacting with people

like, I never gave the innkeeper anything, but he went pink haze the first time I talked to him in NG+

YO, why do you think Kirk invades you 3 times in 3 different spots in Dark Souls but you find his armor at the chaos covenant bonfire?

Well, invasion spots being: in front of the 3 last medium-sized rats in the Depths; the path after the first minor Capra in Demon Ruins and same spot the eldest daughter of Chaos stays, in Lost Izalith.The 2 out of 3 places are accessible from that bonfire, Lost Izalith becomes easier to go if you are a Rank+2 or above in the chaos covenant.This points Kirk as a Chaos Servant (without just using the “Miyazaki said so in an interview” response).Since you can use the Red Eye Orb without being in the Wraith covenant (unlike the dragon eye or the blue eye) it allows the Undead to invade other worlds as a darkwraith while they’re in an other covenant. They’d just had to join the wraiths and rank up to +1, then quit and join whatever covenant they wish.Therefore, Kirk joined the darkwraiths only to possess the Red Eye, and he was probably a well known red invader since the description in his armor calls him a Darkwraith (imagine the descriptions are written according to what the ‘people’ hear from/experience) so he was known as a Wraith, but only you find out he was actually in the Chaos cov, collecting humanities for the Fair Lady, since you were the one to bring him to an end after defeating him 3 times, and so he drags his tired body to the far dead end of the chaos bonfire to die there.
