In Iann’s cabinets, he’s got mostly Dr Bronners items - the peppermint hair creme (for his moustache), liquid soap and lip balm, and the lemongrass-lime shaving soap and lime body balm for dry skin.  He stocks a collection of Neem toothpaste, dental floss and electric toothbrush head replacements.  He uses a regular razor, not a straight-edge.  

Other things: nail-clippers, tweezers, Q-tips, cotton balls, cuticle cutters, medical gloves, ibuprofen, a bottle of codeine, a bottle of lorazepam, bottle of Ambien, homemade fruit salts, Pepto Bismol, Gravol, a stale packet of Tums tablets, Benadryl, bottle of homemade cough syrup, bottle of homemade eye drops, thin vial of Faye’s yellow healing serum, chewable vitamins, bottle of enzyme cleaner, oil of oregano, oil of eucalyptus, a container of honey, a block of soft beeswax, a box of matches, iodine, hydrogen peroxide, isopropyl alcohol, and a forgotten box of XL condoms.

How connected does your character feel with their heritage? How do they express this? Why do they feel this way?

Iann feels no connection to his father’s side because he never knew his father. Since no legal record of Iann’s birth exists, he defines his heritage singularly, by the survival system of his undocumented immigrant mother. 

Iann knows little about his extended family. His grandfather lived in California, and was his childhood boogeyman. He knows nothing about the Cardero grandmother.  Iann doubts the name ‘Cardero’ is even his real surname, since it’s not Mexican.  He might have family in Mexico, but Mala hardly divulged information, and she had no keepsakes to give Iann clues.

If asked, he identifies as Latino and specifically Chicano, if only because of the way his mother and Aunt raised him.  He’s aware that it’s kind of a joke, but Iann is insistent, attributing his self-identity as loyalty to his mother, the sole keeper of his heritage. Iann clings to that 18-year long microcosm of upbringing; his heritage is completely defined by his childhood.  Beyond that, Iann is merely a nowhere-man.
