“make therapy, not art”

Idea for stitching - based on @andersonsallpurpose latest mantra. Using a dark blue “thread” as I make virtual patterns is easier on my brain and eyes. It doesn’t have to be the color we go with.

First version is horizontal; second version is almost square. The squares around each design are there to help me count the spacing of the stitches. They won’t be part of the final design, but the nearly-horizontal version’s square-like border is nice enough that I could include it.

The third image is a close up of the design I stitched on 22-count even-weave fabric last summer. The heart on that piece is the same size as what I put in the patterns here (10 by 10 stitches). The letters will be larger, and the overall design for the nearly-square version is twice as large as the piece I stitched.

I could make it on “regular” stitching fabric (aida cloth), if that’s better. I envisioned it as a miniature piece, since anderson and I are both into miniatures/dolls. But then, her mantra is basically saying, “make the dang thing. don’t over-think it, don’t make it artsy. just make it!” So I may make it more than once, trying different methods.

I just spent about 8 hours editing that sleeve design into a template image. Most of that time was straightening the “arm”. I didn’t think to account for the fabric wrapping until just now, so the design is still a tiny bit distorted by perspective. And I just realized the loop at the top/left of the design was supposed to be centered, oops. Regardless, it’s a lot easier to see what the design is now.

I’d like to adapt it to be a blackwork design, though the painting shows variations in line weight. (Blackwork embroidery is typically done with a single strand of embroidery floss, without variation in line weight.) I really like the entwined figure-eights and all the loops around the flowers/stars.

Idea for stitching, doll clothing - knit sleeveless blouse. I think it was knit as a flat rectangle, then seamed up the back. There are shaped arm holes and a connection at the top, helping to make a wide boatneck neckline.

Bottom hem is a 1 by 1 rib stitch. Body might be a moss stitch or linen stitch? I can try different stitch patterns, including lace stitches, to get different textures.

FIG Script is a typeface designed by Eric Olson in 2002 for Process Type Foundry. ...

Olson describes the FIG types as an "exploration into the generative possibilities type design software and simple grid structures." While suggestion of a raster is clearly visible in the face, a hominess similar to that found in nineteenth century cross-stitched samplers is also found. Many characters have swashes, and the overall effect is reminiscent of cursive.

Idea for stitching - that goddamn quote from my mother, which I can never forget for as long as I fucking live. Text will just be the “Miracle Whip” font and the underline, leaving out the “Kraft” section. Text might end up being more level than featured here, so I don’t have to mess around with an angled design. Bonus is that the outline of blues will be a nice “frame”.

I feel like I need to explain this, because just noting the quote itself doesn’t give weight to the situation. So it’s story time, folks. My mother... *sigh* I’ve got a lot of stories about my mom being a pain.

Circa 2003ish, I was really trying to get my mom to show me more love, so I did nice things for her. One example was making sandwiches for us. She’d compliment my work, thank me for cutting it into triangles - totally oblivious to my goal, because she was in in her own world.

If you’ve ever eaten a sandwich, you know that sometimes the ingredients and such can squish out and make your hands messy. I hate that, to the point where I’ve eaten sandwiches with a fork, even ones I’ve made myself. So I thought to myself, “I’ll put a light amount of mayo on our sandwiches, so I prevent such a fiasco. I’m such a thoughtful daughter.” And as I’m making a sandwich for myself, I hear my mom call from the other room, “Hey, Beth?

Are you paying for this mayonnaise?”

“What? What the fuck kind of question is that?” I asked myself. She joking-explained that I put such a small amount of mayo on the sandwich, I must be paying for it, trying to stretch the supply as much as possible. It was her joking way of saying I need to put more mayo on the damn sandwich.

I don’t remember what happened after that. Knowing how I used to be, I probably did apply more mayo to her sandwich, though I know I explained my reasoning to her. It’s been more than 10 years, and you can see that this incident still bugs me to a degree. I still eat Miracle Whip, but I end up referencing the quote half the time.
