I am looking for the origins of folklore stories from my childhood.
I had a book of folk stories as a child. It came from my mom's childhood, but we lost it while moving sometime in my youth. I do not think I will be able to find the actual title/publisher or anything like that, but I would like to at least find the origins or original versions of the stories.
Here is some of the details of some of the stories I remember: (this might be super inaccurate, as I am going of my memories from being 6 to 8 yrs old):
An old lady in the forest captures a little girl and turns her into a butterfly. She is kept in a cage with all the other butterflies. Her brother comes to rescue her.
A whole family (with like 8 kids) had extremely long noses, because they hang on a washing line to stretch their noses. I can't remember why they did that, if it was to be fashionable, or were they punishing the kids. Their noses was long enough that they had to tie it to their shoes so they wouldn't trip over it. They also maybe lived on an island?
If anyone can assist with either the identification of the origins of these stories, or the identification of the actual book, it would be much appreciated.
Other details about the book, if it might be helpful:
It had black ink drawings, about one or two per story.
There was at least 10 stories it it, but could be more.
The book had a light blue fabric cover, and was around a centimeter thick.
I have a feeling it was from German or Russian origin (translated to Afrikaans - my home language, and the language the book was in), but this is only a guess.
The stories were PG13 at least. - as is most unsanitized folk stories set in woods.
Probably published in the 1950's or 1960's, based on the age of my mother and grandmother.
