On International Day of People with Disability, please note some disabilities are invisible.
Each year International Day of People with Disability (IDPD) is held on 3 December. Its aim is to raise public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability and celebrate their achievements and contributions.
International Day of People with Disability!
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) has been annually observed on 3 December around the world. The theme for this IDPD 2019 is “Promoting the participation of persons with disabilities and their leadership: taking action on the 2030 Development Agenda”
“When you hear the word ‘disabled’, people immediately think about people who can’t walk or talk or do everything that people take for granted. Now, I take nothing for granted. But I find the real disability is people who can’t find joy in life and are bitter”- Teri Garr
Since 1992, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) has been annually observed on 3 December around the world. The 2019 theme is ” Promoting the participation of persons with disabilities and their leadership: taking action on the 2030 Development Agenda”. This year, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) focuses on the empowerment of persons with disabilities for inclusive, equitable and sustainable development as anticipated in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which pledges to ‘leave no one behind’ and recognizes disability as a cross-cutting issues, to be considered in the implementation of its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The aim of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) is promoting empowerment, and helping to create real opportunities for people with disabilities. This enhances their own capacities and supports them in setting their own priorities. Empowerment involves investing in people – in jobs, health, nutrition, education, and social protection. When people are empowered they are better prepared to take advantage of opportunities, they become agents of change and can more readily embrace their civic responsibilities. The estimated one billion people living with disabilities worldwide face many barriers to inclusion in many key aspects of society. As a result, people with disabilities do not enjoy access to society on an equal basis with others, which includes areas of transportation, employment, and education as well as social and political participation. EWEI, sees the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) as a day to celebrate people with disability and is calling on the community to reaffirm their commitment to empower persons with disabilities and ensure access, inclusiveness and equality. Facts from @unitednations • 15% of the world’s population, or one billion people, are persons with disabilities. • 80% of persons with disabilities live in developing countries. @unitednationshumanrights #idpd2019 #idpd https://www.instagram.com/p/B5mOyPcATTT/?igshid=1skos987v3tgx
