man’s best friend

Wei didn’t mean to bond with the damned dog. He was always a cat person, maybe a rabbit if he was being particularly adventurous. His own parents were not crazy about animals, refusing to give him a pet, saying they would never have much time to take care of the things. Except, that never made much sense to Wei. His parents did not really do much of the rearing in their household; that was usually left to a string of nannies. He had a better relationship with his mother, but she was still not the best at anything touchie feelie. He started to agree with them; there was no need for a pet. It was a waste of time, something else to get in the way. And even if he did want a dog, the most high maintenance of pets, it should have been some type of high class purebreed. A show dog maybe. Instead, he was buying toys for a mutt.
He had dragged Hanbyul to the store, dog wrapped in his arms. Others had them on leashes, but that seemed like anarchy while looking for toys. He had dragged Hanbyul since he was relatively sure he liked dogs and Junior, the little bastard, had wormed his way into his heart. He supposed that meant he was going to have to keep him after the show ended. Wasn’t that what the whole thing was for anyways, convincing people to adopt dogs? He just had not expected it to work on him as well. He supposed he should have realized he was so convincing, he could even get him, a notorious dog hater, to want a pooch.
He picked up a little rubber hot dog and showed it to Hanbyul. “What do you think, hyung? Think Junior likes this kind of thing? Would it look good in pictures?” He needed his dog to be selfie ready. Just because he loved him did not mean he was not going to get something out of the relationship. He was not exactly a humanitarian. “What do dogs see in these things anyways?” he asked, squeezing the thing. A squeak emitted and Junior started barking. Tiny little yips.
