According to the little counter on the bottom of IEDR‘s website, over 20,000 .ie domains have been registered this year alone. That figure is part of the 195,838 Irish domains registered in total 195,838 (at time of publishing).
Registering a domain in Ireland as a .ie address is done by a ‘class’ and ‘category’ system, with a number of domain registration companies listed on the IEDR website.

‘The IEDR formed at University College Dublin, however in 2000 it became a private company. The IEDR has no shareholders, the company is owned by members who are the directors.’
