"Out of Your Chair, Into the Action! Live role-playing: the next big wave in gaming" -- Terry Dykstra illustration for article by Michael A Ventrella in Dragon 173, September 1991. The author recounted his adventures with the New England Roleplaying Organization (NERO), and mentions the International Fantasy Gaming Society (IFGS), both of which still are around. He never used the term "LARP," which still wasn't universally known.
I don't know whether Dykstra himself had seen actual live action role-playing yet, but this looks exactly like my group's first homemade attempt at costuming in the early 80s. The few small photos in the article show garb with fewer visible anachronisms.
