They called it RAGNAROK, the Twilight of the Gods.
A battle among all the powerful deities in the Nine Realms that would change the course of history forever. And he, like all the other souls in the realm of the dead, could only wait and see what was to happen. His son survived, much to his relief, but there was one who did not.
Even with the countless confirmations from the survivors of the war, the reality of her loss was still sinking in. Had it only been three days since he saw her last? He had done his best to convince her not to go – she was the only one who could care for the souls in Helheim; it was her duty – but she had remained firm, saying that she would return. He would have gone with her then, saying that he could help. But he was BOUND to the realm and could not leave, no matter how much he wanted to.
And with the news that Hel had died in the midst of the war, it was possible that he and the other souls were trapped. They didn’t know how long they would have to wait for her to return or if they were doomed to spend the rest of eternity in the dark realm of the dead. Should his son die, then it was possible that he would be brought to a different realm.
Those were words of firm denial, for he knew that he would see her again. She was the Goddess of Helheim, the Goddess of Death. Who would ferry and tend to the souls of this realm if not her? He still had hope, one that the messengers clearly didn’t have. Doubt was clear on their faces, but he didn’t have time to convince them or any naysayers that their queen would live.
No, the body before him was nothing more than an illusion, and if he was meant to wait for her until her return, hold an eternal vigil until she was in his arms once more, he would. For that was love, was it not?
And he had loved her for a thousand years.
He could wait for a thousand years...and more.
