WHAT HAPPENED TO ‘LONELY IS THE MUSE’ SINGER YN YLN?
Born in 1989, in Kingston, Ontario, YN YLN broke into the music scene at just nineteen as the lead singer of The Veronicas in the early 2000s. After suggesting a more hard-rock sound for the band and finding their creative differences growing stronger, YLN found herself out of the band and dropped by her label in 2007, a period during which she considered faking her death. Her manager, comedian David Spade, who she first met when they started alongside each other on TV Sitcom 8 Simple Rules, famously said this in an interview:
“She calls me one night and she says “David, tell everybody I’ve killed myself. I’m not going to do it, but I want out of the spotlight for good. I’m changing my name and getting a nose job, and then I’m moving to Australia.” It took me two hours to talk her down. She’s one of the most insanely talented people that I’ve ever met, and with talent like that comes burdens and demons.”
YLN returned to the spotlight in 2010 with the release of her debut solo single, a hard rock ballad called ‘Lonely Is The Muse’. Her first album, named after the explosive debut single, debuted at the top of the Billboard alternative charts. She would release three more albums after that, each one playing with the punk and hard rock sound that her producers tried to stop her from exploring. 2012’s ‘Kill Me’ was featured in CW series ‘Gossip Girl’’s series finale.
She even briefly took up acting, starring alongside Anton Yelchin, Colin Firth and David Tennant in 2012’s ‘Fright Night’ and most recently as Natasha Trace in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’.
In 2017, she married ‘Happy Valley’ actor James Norton, who played fictional psychopath Tommy Lee Royce in the British crime drama during a lavish ceremony held at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire.
The couple would divorce in 2019, after just three years of marriage. What followed was almost two years of court proceedings and media vultures, a period that Spade said found YLN sleeping in his spare bedroom. She would briefly return to acting for a minor role in ‘The Dead Don’t Die’, but much of the money she made from the zombie film went to paying her divorce lawyer.
“I didn’t want to fight any more. At that point, I was ready to pack it in and let James have everything. I wanted a clean break, and I wanted to start fresh for myself.”
In 2020 she released ‘Blue Period’, an album of pop punk ballads including ‘Happy Ending’, which she wrote in just under two hours the night her divorce was finalized.
She’s stayed out of headlines mostly since then, focusing on touring and rejuvenating her acting career. You can watch her on Amazon in season three of ‘Reacher’ alongside Alan Ritchson and Anthony Micheal Hall as Detective Susan Duffy.
Val Kilmer, who she acted alongside in Top Gun, was someone she considered a close mentor and friend. Following his death in April of this year, she said that ‘Val was one of the kindest people I had ever met. Though I hadn’t known him for long, I am devastated. My life was better for having him in it, and for being able to share my music and my mind with him.”
