II - IGNORANCE IS A WEAKNESS
I am stunned with joy. In a matter of a few days, my first blog post reached 50 thousand likes and 8 thousand followers. I was reading through the comments and your positivity has given me a reason to live, after many years of feeling useless; breathing without living. Among the supportive comments, many of you asked me about Oceania’s government and how it makes me feel. These are the most requested questions which I’ll be answering today: As a citizen in Orwell’s 1984, how do you feel about your government? What options do you feel you have for expressing opposition to this government or to participate in it?
In order to make my answer as accurately as possible, I will talk about the meaning of IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH (a phrase from the Party’s main slogan) and how it plays a key role regarding the government’s objectives within my community. The movie “Room” is a good example to compare my situation, it is about a girl who is kidnapped and raped for seven years and she gives birth to a boy who spends the first five years of his life in captivity, in a small room. Since he has never been outside, that room is his only reality; the spoon is his best friend. It is not until he is able to escape the room when he realizes there is another version to life, where the room was only an isolated and depressed corner of the world itself. Oceania is that room, not as tiny and with so few people, but with the same purpose. No one gets in no one leaves and once you live under the Party’s regime, you become ignorant to the point where you actually believe that BIG BROTHER is looking out for your wellbeing...
I would rather kill myself than participate in the government, however as I mentioned before, this social media platform has become my purpose for living. The government has already sent threats and a complex investigation to discover mi identity and shut my blog down, they say I’m a threat to the system and therefore, should be executed. I find it quite funny because it is not death I’m afraid of, but to have lived for many years without making every breath count. I hope I make it alive until next week so I can keep you updated, stay tuned and always remember to live every day at its finest.
