I heard Zabotin remark more than once that living abroad spoiled some Russians. It had certainly spoiled Anna and me. In Ottawa we had a comfortable apartment of our own. In Moscow a place that size would have been shared by four or five families.
Quote #1: Once Igor Gouzenko started to contrast the differences between a lifestyle in his homeland, Russia, and a lifestyle in this new glorious and free country, Canada, we start to see his shifting loyalties. His family and he start to get used to this luxurious lifestyle (i.e. having a comfortable apartment), and don’t want to return to Russia where they would have to suffer (i.e. living in a place where a normal Canadian apartment would be shared by four or five families).
