B is for Brazil 🇧🇷 . . . I’ve been lucky enough to be sent to this vibrant country twice for commissions now. The first was back in 2001 when Tony Blair became the first British Prime Minister to visit Argentina since the 1982 Falklands War. I mainly remember shooting lots of handshake pictures with various presidents. This picture of Cherie was by far the best during a long week hopping between Jamaica, Brazil, Argentina and Mexico. I actually thought that I’d shot this in Argentina, but a check of the caption reminded me it was taken on the Brazil side of the famous Iguaçu Falls - we crossed the border into Argentina that afternoon and returned to Brazil late that night, so I was in the country all of six hours probably. That’s often the way it is on these trips - if it’s Tuesday, then we must be either in Brasilia or Sau Paulo 🤯 This shot made the cover of Private Eye that week (always an honour) and spent two seasons on the backboards behind Ian Hislop on Have I Got News For You. . . . My second trip was more recently in January 2017 when Cunard, one of my lovely commercial clients, commissioned me to shoot aerials of their ship, Queen Victoria sailing along the Amazon into the capital of the region, Manaus. To do so, she had to pass another natural phenomenon, the meeting of the waters. This is where the Amazon and the Rio Negro meet and in doing so create a visible line in the river caused by the differences in temperature, speed and water density of the two rivers. I also shot destination images around and above the city and in the jungle; sloths, pink river dolphins and indigenous indians, absolutely the trip of a lifetime for which I will always be grateful 🙏🏻.
