Wendel takes belief in mental game to Union City baseball
Union City wrapped up its 2025 baseball season at 13–12, earning sectional and regional titles and reaching the Semistate semifinals under Coach Jeff Wendel. The year marked continued progress for the program after its historic regional win in 2024, when Wendel served as assistant.
Wendel’s approach emphasizes mental performance. He notes that guiding athletes through pressure, mindset, and preparation is one of his primary strengths, supported by training with mental performance coach Brian Cain. His focus on clarity and presence plays a central role in how the team prepares.
One of the early challenges was getting players to trust one another and commit to a shared mindset. Over time, the group adopted Wendel’s “DAWG mentality,” centered on being Determined, Available, prioritizing WIN (“What’s Important Now”), and being Great teammates. These expectations became a consistent theme as the season unfolded.
