IIT Indore’s NIRF Journey: A Snapshot of Rankings Over the Last 5 Years
The Indian Institute of Technology Indore (IIT Indore), established in 2009, continues to make its mark in India’s higher education landscape. One of the eight new IITs initiated by the Ministry of Education, it started its journey under the mentorship of IIT Bombay, operating temporarily from the Institute of Engineering and Technology at Devi Ahilya University, Indore. The foundation stone for its permanent campus was laid by then Union HRD Minister Arjun Singh in February 2009.
Fast forward to 2025, IIT Indore has grown significantly both in infrastructure and academic performance. In the recently released National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) by the Ministry of Education, the institute holds the 33rd position in the overall category. It has also secured the 16th rank in engineering, 27th in research, and a notable 8th position in management.
A review of the past five years reflects fluctuations in its rankings, showcasing both its achievements and areas with scope for development. While the institute has consistently maintained a strong presence in engineering, the surge in management and research categories points toward its expanding academic diversity and interdisciplinary approach.
These rankings reflect more than just numbers—they underscore IIT Indore’s growing emphasis on innovation, research output, faculty quality, and industry interface, aligning with national educational benchmarks and global competitiveness.
