These photos are terrible, between my poor camera, the format of the book (it's really hard to photograph) and the fact that I needed to work with the snow to take daylight shots of it, BUT. Here's a second post for Binderary!
I've fallen in love with @ikimaru's Klance comics, and I'm growing more and more fond of the format of A4 pages, folded vertically. Remember my two lyrics collections? I have definitely been looking for more excuses to use this type of typeset, and Sunny's comics fit the format perfectly.
It makes for a book somewhat awkward to hold in hand at first, and absolutely AWFUL to fit on a small shelf, but I thankfully have bigger ones.
But it's so nice.
The endpages are the same Lion pattern (found in the †Amino community) that I already used in my Call Me Beep Me prototype. I just recoloured it so it would be only red, blue and black lions. Honestly, I feel like half of my Klance binds are going to have this type of endpages. I love this pattern so much!
The bind itself is nothing exceptional; cased book cover, using a leftover of the dream bookcloth from the same prototype, because I have a strong NO WASTE policy in my workshop. The cover itself is black paper, printed on with a laser printer, then foiled using a laminating machine and rainbox foil.
Tragically, it ended up becoming a learning experience, since the foil slipped and now some lions are red, others are red too, and space is blue.
Lesson learnt: tape your foil before laminating. Noted.
And since I had already started printing in colours, I thought I might as well do another comic from Ikimaru, "Sleepover", which has not had a physical release. It's a super simple one this time, a softcover otabind.
The book served as a fantastic stress-test of my printer, with its black pages. Happy to say the printer did fantastic :)
Otabinds are really easy and quick to make, hard to fail (except in case of guillotine accidents, which... I am sadly no stranger to), and they allow for a nice hidden secret of spine decoration. I made mine galaxy-Klance-coloured.
Both binds were made to celebrate surviving 2025 and sucessfully entering 2026 with a new fandom under my belt, and I am DEFINITELY making more books with this format of A4 folded vertically in the future.
Thanks so much, Sunny, for allowing me to experiment, and for sharing your art in the first place. I'm so happy to have your comics on my shelves (and hoping to get Fool Me Once, Love Me Twice soon!)
i keep forgetting ikimaru isnt just a tale of the past and still posts art
ikimaru carries the voltron fandom and has been carrying since day one
