Well Try putting some anti-bacterial stuff on it, and keep him in the house for a little while. If it helps then it's just an infected scab. If it doesn't look any better, call the vet and make him an appointment.
I don't think we have any anti-bacterial stuff in the house, but I'll need to ask our next door neighbours, who the cat seems to love more than us, if they've asked a vet about his nose.
