Day 28: Honey
It has been exaclty 4 weeks since I went into quarantine, and we are still going strong!
Today’s Happy thing:
I am a huge coffee drinker. I usually have at least one cup a day, and I absolutely love trying out new coffee shops. I tend to find little ones in the nooks and crannys of society. There is one about 40 minutes north of where I go to school, and they make the best Irish cream lattes, and the best vegan peanut butter cookies. In one of my hometowns--I live between 2 college towns that are about equidistant from my house--, there is a small, Christian coffee shop that has a small coffee menu. I always get the same thing: a large, iced honey latte. And if I am feeling extra dangerous, I get an extra shot of espresso in it. Last summer, I usually went to this coffee shop on Mondays, and sometimes Fridays, and the baristas know me by my face and order. I ordered my usual for takeout coffee last week, and the owner of the shop smiled super big when he saw me walk in. The coffee shop even smelled like I remembered. It felt nostalgic to walk through those doors, and to see those same people I always saw. I went again today to grab my takeout, and the same barista was there. It felt odd not being able to sit in the corner booth and read my book while the world woke up around me. Their chairs were standing on their tables, and their booths were taped off. It pulled on my heart to see that their establishment was bare. But, when I grabbed my coffee, the owner thanked me profusely for ordering coffee from their cafe. I realized that while bigger shops where still running smoothly, smaller ones were not. I smiled back, and grabbed my paper straw to take with me. I sat in my car for a minute and I came to a conclusion: I think that, even though the order is only go out if you need to, I am going to order coffee from them on my usual days again. It is a win win: I get my favorite coffee, and my favorite shop gets business. If I can spread a little bit of kindess in this chaos, then I will. When this is all over, I will revel in the sunlight of my favorite corner booth, and I will sip my honey bean water to my hearts content. And I have faith that this “dream” of mine will be quite soon. The sun will shine again on society, and the human race will adapt.
