Just want to say thanks for doing something to support and spread the culture! We need more people doing this stuff. I support 100%
Word that's love man thank you.
I'll brb. Going to make a sandwich.
Time passes.
I'm back from making the sandwich.
What kind of sandwich did you make?
Regular PB&J sandwiches, 2 of them.
That's a classic sandwich, thank you for letting me interview you. How long have you been b-boying?
Hmm, it's been about 7 years now.
How did you get into b-boying?
Lol, ah well back in highschool I would see these kids break almost everyday in the hallway. I got really interested from seeing a basic footwork step. That summer I just danced, I didn't do anything else. All I wanted was to learn more about this dance and the culture. Now 7 years later I'm still in it lol. I love it.
Which is your most exciting moment in b-boying so far?
Hmm my most exciting moment was being put down recently in The Bronx Boys Rocking Crew. This crew started in 1975 and there about 300 members world wide. It just feels great to be a part of such an historical crew.
Congratulations, that's definitely exciting.
It's an honor.
Do you know all the countries The Bronx Boys Rocking Crew span?
Everywhere from here in the US to the UK, Brazil, Germany, South Korea, Colombia, Australia, Belgium, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, South Africa, France, Switzerland, Italy, China, Holland, Algeria, Japan...the list goes on. Haha.
It sounds like b-boy history is still being preserved today.
It is! There are many people who still teach the history. Knowing history in anything in hip hop culture is super important. Without what happened in the past, there is no us today.
Talking about history we used to be in Marching Band together. Which one do you like better, Marching Band or B-boying?
Which one I like more? lol. I can't choose between those two. I love being around music in general and both of those things involve music heavily. I guess if I really had to choose though, I'd choose b-boying. I've accomplished a lot more with b-boying. I got to meet people from all around the world. I got to see everyone's individuality within this dance and it's a great thing to see. B-boyin has also gave me opportunities for jobs as well.
What were some of the opportunities you received through b-boying?
I've gotten opportunities to do a lot of performances for various occasions; sweet 16's, weddings, bar / bat mitzvahs. My favorite though is being able to teach at dance studios to kids. I love getting the youth involved with this dance. I am truly grateful to be able to share my knowledge of this dance with them.
What are some of your favorite musicians to break to?
I break to a lot of different music. I love anything that has to do with James Brown. He's a huge inspiration to me. I also break to Wu-tang, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, The Budos Band, pretty much anything that has to do with funk / hip hop.
One time for the readers, your b-boy name.
I go by the name of ILLROC.
Anyone you'd like to shout out?
Yeah, I want to shout out my crews / family:
I represent 2k-Tactics , The Bronx Boys Rocking Crew, Lost Kidz, and Lost Tribes of the Universal Zulu Nation. PEACE.
