For anyone who’s interested, this right here was my inspiration for Namjoon’s new bonsai in ‘The Garden Thief (M).’ Although his would be much, much smaller than this lovely specimen. See how roots are swallowing the initial pot, and how there’s another below to catch those roots?
Now this is a Barringtonia acutangula, a different species from the bonsai in the story, but ficuses, espically Ficus microcarpa, are extremely good at putting out massive amounts of roots (specifically aerial roots). I’m fairly confident that under the right conditions you could get a ficus to do the same (since this is a very similar style to root-over-rock, but instead root-over-pot).
